We heat our house with a wood fire place—it is my job to either let the fire go out and restart it in the morning, or to keep the wood burning day and night. I have opted for keeping the wood going day and night. Because of that decision my body is tuned to the subtle sifts in the temperature of the house, as the wood burns down. That is one reason I’m awake in the middle of the night. (Although, that reason doesn’t work for the other seasons of the year.)
I think I’m a light sleeper. I always have been, even as a small child. I drove my parents bats, since they were heavy sleepers.
Last night I came awake quite suddenly. Laying in bed I could NOT figure out what had waken me. I checked the wood stove, all was good there, checked Boomer, okay, and all the cats. Terry was sleeping peacefully.
I have no notion what why…
Laying back down, turned so I could look out the window; I thought to myself how the air had stilled, there was the inward feel tof the small hours—even though it was still full dark.
I lay very still listening. An ember broke in the wood stove, with a crack then another with a muffled pop.
The night was undisturbed, waiting for the sunrise. I drifted off to sleep once more secure in the fact our nights are growing shorter and the days longer. In another month we will have a completely different feel to our winter weary world.
With much love,
Linda
Beautiful. I too am a light sleeper and my favorite thing to see/experience when I wake in the wee hours of the night is a full moon descending past my window – certain times of the year. Well, actually, my favorite memory would be if I didn’t wake up then, but enjoy what you can ;-).

I love watching the moon grow huge and miss it terribly when it is in the new moon stage.

I also am the fire watcher at our house and I definitely keep it going during the night or we would be icicles when we get up in the morning. I usually wake up around 2:00 a.m. and fill the woodstove and it holds until we get up around 6:30. It’s nice getting up to a warm house. That wake up call though usually catches up with me by mid-April and Eddie is put on stove duty for a couple nights until I catch up.
Stay warm!! I’ve a feeling we still have a couple to three months left of this stuff and I’m so ready for spring and lots of sunshine!

It’s warming up here…a false spring I suppose, but I’ll take it! I’ll take anything spring like right now.

I begin to feel the same Linda. It is now light when I get up at 6.45am and when the farmer comes in for his tea at 5pm, so – as we say here – the days are drawing out nicely. Can’t wait for Spring. My daffodils by the back door are almost out.

Same here Linda. It is now light when I get up at 6.45am and also when the farmer comes in for his tea at 5pm. My daffodils by the back door are in bud – and yes, another month and we will be in the clear and Spring can come and see us all.

Well, no not really. Just don’t sleep very well, I suppose.

I know I exaggerated, but when I think of your being out in the night alone with nature and that huge expanse of sky, it seems very special to me.

I also wake suddenly, for no reason that I can tell, but sadly I often have trouble getting back to sleep. It doesn’t help that the Husband works shifts… I’m glad all is well in your world. We have one more day away, and then it’s time to turn homewards for another long, long trip – but with more visits to friends this time!

This post is a lovely meditation; turning insomnia into a beautiful thing rather than something to worry about! I’ll try to remember every word when I wake in the middle of the night next time.
