Terry has finished rolling one field…there are many more field to work , but this one is finished with the plowing and the rolling.

And here is what it looks like after being rolled. There are several more steps to go before we can start water and then plant. (Terry wet plants…the seeds come up faster and they come up all at once, that way.)
It’s always a good feeling to get one step done and ready for the next step!

What a never ending cycle. My father never rolled his fields. What does that piece of equipment lookmlike?

I guess the discs and harrows he used broke up the clods of earth. They were two separate pieces of equipment, used after plowing.

Well, we use a disk first to cut up all the stalks, then he plows and the roller (like a giant rolling pin) smashes everything down. On some parts of the farm he does use a ripper, which breaks up earth that is packed real hard from the driving on it or cows walking in paths on it.

It’s always a wonderful feeling when progress can be seen with Spring jobs on a farm. I hope the work on the other fields goes as well.

Terry worked until 10 last night and went back out early this morning. The is just right (so far) but drying fast. Strange for March. 81* on Friday…whew!

Like a giant rolling pin, like we use to make pie dough. Only lots of rollers, since the field is so big. 🙂

I’ve never heard of the term “rolling” the fields, but I think I know what he’s doing! I followed the links that you mentioned in reply to the first comment, and the piece of equipment he’s using looks like a combination between a disk and a spring hire. Is that right? It’s so interesting to me how things are done differently or called different things in different parts of the country! Your spring work sure starts early! I hope you have a good start to the growing season! 🙂

Thank you, Alica! I don’t know…I tried to look up what a spring hire implement was, but couldn’t find anything. The roller has long tubes that are used to break up the clods…like a rolling pin. We do use the disk first to cut up all the corn stalks. I find our differences so interesting.
