The UnMystery Mystery! Another Sherlock Boomer Adventure

Chapter Five

Now, if you remember, last week Min-Min woke me up from a very light doze…Beaglie’s don’t ever sleep heavy.  Nope, no sire, no way…we are always ready at the flash of light, the sound of tires or…whew! Boy am I ever tired.

Anyway, Min-Min woke me up with alarm in her voice, which had me awake in an instant.  Then I heard Romeo whinnying!  Min-Min told me that Sam took off for the bridge growling so we took off in the same direction.  It was about the time we started off I realized we were hearing crackling sounds.

“STOP, MINDY!”  Not toward the bridge but toward the machine shed.  “I not only hear crackling sounds I can see sparks flying.”  I took off at a huge run…this spring has been goofy crazy with fires.  If there was a fire at the machine shed the whole farm was in deep trouble.

I made it to the machine shed, just as Mindy jumped on to the trailer stored next to the shed.  I looked back to see if Sammy was coming, but I guess not. He stopped about the trash can area; watched us run by and headed on toward the bridge.  Romeo was still on the other side of the canal staring at us…”Find out what’s happening,” he whinnied. “Then come let me know.”

“OKAY!” I bayed back.

I turned around and screeched to a stop…the monster was back!!  A space alien had landed in our yard and was shooting sparks everywhere!  The space alien’s big black head with ONE EYE was bent over something so deadly sparks were flinging off his long skinny arms and HUGE WEIRD LEATHER LIKE HANDS!!!  Not only that…the Space Alien must have tackled Dad and gobbled him up for the Space Alien was wearing Dad’s shirt, Levis, and boots!

I started barking BIG TIME!! HUGE BIG LOUD LUNG FILLING BUILDING RICOCHETING BARKS!

Min-Min added in huge yowls and squeals!

Suddenly Mom was there.

“What is going on?”  She asked putting a hand on my head and reaching out to grab Mindy, who scrabble away as fast as possible.

About that time the Space Alien stopped making sparks, raised that big, huge, leather like hand to his head and TOOK HIS FACE OFF!!!

I crawled behind Mom…that thing ate Dad and now it’s going to try to get ME!

Then…there was DAD!  Just looking at all of us—Mom (who was laughing, why I don’t know), Min-min who had crawled to the top of the corral and was hiding up there and me…shivering and shaking behind Mom legs.

“The welder must have scared them” mom explained to Dad.

Dad just looked at us again and lowered his helmet and went right back to work.

Shish.  I tucked my tail under my body and slunk back to the house.

“Wait, Boomer!” Mom called.  “Come sit with me—everything is going to be okay. It’s just Dad fixing something on something so he can keep farming.”

Mom was sitting on the trailer.  I walked back over and just looked at her—Mom reached down and picked me up and sat me down beside her on her side away from Dad and the spark making thing called a Welder.

Gradually, the warm sunshine and mom petting me calmed me down enough I went to sleep.

I slept for a long-time.  A really nice long-time.  Then I felt Mom getting up.  I heard her voice…”Come on, Boom, let’s go.”  Dad heading out to make ditches and we need to go over and get the railroad ties for the new flower beds I’m creating.”

I jumped up as fast as my short Beagle legs can jump and almost fell off the trailer.

“Goodness, Boomie!” Mom caught me.  “You sure have been having a rough time lately.”

‘Not really Mom…it’s all the monsters who have been invading the farm, they are exhausting me.’ I licked Mom’s hand as she lowered me to the ground.

Then she picked me up, put me on the four-wheeler, and we headed over to the bone yard, which is really the junk pile of all types of lumber.

Dad went by with the ditcher….Mom and I came back got the pickup, went back over and loaded the pickup,

then Dad went by with the blade to make the waste ditches.

Back home, Mom unloaded me, the railroad ties and went to work.  Watching Mom work made me realize I needed to go tell Romeo what was happening.  Off I went, only to find out Romeo was way, way, way up the pasture.

Coming back in the yard I realized I had nothing to do, no jobs, nothing to protect so it was time to….

TAKE A NAP!
