For two afternoons, Evan came and helped plant the pinto beans. Terry was still taking it slow (He is still taking it slow, but not as slow).
But after that Terry began to feel house bound…I don’t know how, he was sitting out there watching Evan and I. He said he wants to feel the tractor under him, to feel the wind fanning the air, watching the soil and the implement working, to smell the fragrance of the plants and the soil.
So promising me he would NOT lift anything, Evan and I hooked up the Mormon Creaser and the Marker Bar on one tractor.
Then we hooked up the fertilizer tank on the other tractor.
Two tractors ready to go. All he has to do is sit there and drive.
Whatever he needs now I can do.
The haystacks are shrinking. I’ve been loading out two to three sometimes four customers a day. So we are making it.
“Please be careful, Terry!” I pled with him.
He just smiled at me and said: “To quote our neighbor, Darrel —‘Farming makes me happy’!” With that he carefully climbed into the tractor and was off.
So while he is out there enjoying himself (with a huge smile–like the sun breaking forth into that golden light we all so love, I might add) I am saying prayers to his guardian angel….a most overworked being.
Your friend on a western Colorado farm,
Linda

I’m willing to bet that the feeling Terry gets when he’s out there in the field is the best possible medicine. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have his guardian angel on alert!

He agrees with you! And he doesn’t feel pressured to get anything done, because it is getting done.

Sometimes work is the best medicine – as long as he doesn’t overdo it!! It feels good to feel normal.

And he IS listening to his body and stopping when he gets tired. That is good thing!

He’s finding his healing out there in the sun and air, smelling the wind and the earth. He’s a wise man, and knows what he needs…

I can’t imagine a farmer having surgery in the middle of spring planting…or anytime other than maybe mid winter, perhaps. What a bummer! But I’m glad to hear he’s doing well, and that you have help! I hope those beans grow well!

Winter would work…but in your case, there would never be a down time…Dairy’s never slow down! Thank you!

Oh my gosh Linda, I’ve just kind of been grabbing posts here and there as we travel … not a lot of time to read … and I totally missed the one about Terry’s appendix operation… I just scrolled back and read it. Yes, he is keeping his Guardian Angel busy, but I know that angel and you both want to keep him happy. I’m sure he’ll continue to heal well as long as he rests when he needs to. Wow…. a little too late to send my good wishes and happy thoughts your way, but you know I would have, had I read that post on time. Thank goodness for your kids being there.
Both of you take care now.

whew! as hot as it’s been ~ your (present) top photo, dusk-time? is a good time to be out there. I don’t work anywhere near as hard as “you guise” — but started to get heat-exhaustion yesterday just fixing things in our garage! (not to mention the ‘skeeters 😦 )

So far the wind…oh that wind…the hot dry wind is keeping the skeeters to bay!

Farmers are resilient! Tell him not to lift anything!! Tell him to take it slow as he doesn’t want to delay his recovery 🙂

That was hard to get through his head. But…he finally has it…either I lift or one of our kids lift!

J > Agree with D. Interesting tractor – not see that before: one front wheel? Or is it an optical illusion? If just one, your soil must be very firm. But why? I’m curious?

Tricycle front wheel, makes it easier to turn sharply into the furrows!

We are slowing down…although, we work as hard as we always did, we don’t get as much done.
