This is a most unusual August. It feels more like September. Not even early September, but late September.
We are having lots of rain…scary now that the alfalfa is down; needing to dry and become hay.
The air is very cool, although it makes for nice sleeping at night.
While working out by the 1970 John Deere grain auger a little Quail flew up on the corral fence…then in a graceful movement walked
to the the bottom rung of the hay stack fence…calling gently in the velvet air for his or her mate.
Later in the day, as the sun warmed the air, making pools of bright light, and the bees worked busily in the Russian Sage; I watched a hawk land lazily on the electric pole next to our yard.
We watched each other for the longest time. Then with a very silent lift of it’s wing — the sun sent the hawk’s shadow over the lawn, then over where I was working; rising up, up, up in the sky I saw it no more.
Your friend on a western Colorado farm,
Linda
This sounds like a perfect day, except for the rain on the alfalfa. I hope you don’t get any more of that until the hay is in.

I stayed out there to protect all the little Barn Swallows…they haven’t migrated yet and still have babies raising up.

It was. I’m sure the little birds were glad when he flew away!

Hawks will pick up a cat too. Glad you are getting moisture, it’d be nice to get your hay up dry though. We are dry in SW Iowa but like I remember my late Dad saying concerning the weather — “One extreme follows another”. So if his saying holds true, it will turn wet and soggy. Time’ll tell eh. Thanks for posting.

I know they will…I stayed out there and watched him to make sure everyone stays safe. Sorry he will have to get his lunch some place else. It’s wet and soggy here so many the high and dry is coming…we need it for harvest!

Is that little quail what’s known as a Bob White? The minute I saw the silhouette, my mind went ‘click!’ and said ‘Bob White’. Heaven knows where I get this trivia….

I think it is a Gambol Quail. I’m not sure what a bobwhite looks like.

I went and had a rummage on Google. Bobwhites don’t have that head plume…

I think they are back east…closer to Celi’s area, but I’m not sure.

The bobwhite says it’s name, apparently. Pretty neat!

I’m always surprised they can make it to live with all the predators around. So when I see one I’m very excited!
