“There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.”—Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes
Kit and I took off frocking all the way down the two corn field farm road, bouncing back and forth, running in and out of the rows of corn, scattering Quail, Pheasants, mice and other sorts of creatures here and there.
Momma Fox came around the corner on to the two corn field road just as we got to the new cement ditch!
“KIT!” she barked!
“BOOMER! STOP RIGHT NOW! I MEAN IT! STOP!”
We stopped right in mid-wrestle!
Stopped and jumped up, covered all over in dirt, leaves from the corn, and weed seeds!
We were a mess! For sure Kit was a mess…his coat is full and thick and bushy it catches on e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g!
We turned around and looked way down the two corn field farm road and saw a very mad Momma fox heading toward us. She even looked like she was stomping her feet!
She even looked like she had FIRE in her EYES!
Kit and I just stood there and waited. I mean, what else could we do?
I mean I could have ran off…she isn’t MY mother, but she is Kit’s Mom and well, I really couldn’t do that to my buddy!
We watched her stomp up the road, when she got there I said: “Hi, Ms. Fox. Good to see you again. Did you happen to see the buzzards flying over the Rocky Point Hill? I sure hope so, Kit and were just heading over there to see what they were circling and loping in the sky about.”
Momma stopped cold…”Buzzards, I’ll give you…” she growled…”You two have scattered lunch, supper, dinner, breakfast, and every morning and afternoon snack for three days far and wide.” Her lip was back from her teeth, resting in a trembling little line on her gums…
“Buzzards, Mam, Buzzards.” Kit looked beseechingly at his Mom.
“Buzzards?!” She said in a puzzled voice.
“BUZZARDS!” we all shouted together.
“FOOD” Momma Fox and Kit barked together.
We all looked at each other; turned our tails to the corn field and took off for the Rocky Point!
