The Adventures of Sherlock Boomer—The Mystery of Nothing Chapter 8

“There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.”—Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes

Chapter Eight

Momma Fox liked naps.  But how in the world could Kit and I like a nap when there was so much to do and so little time to do ‘stuff’ in!  In this case we have to get lots of NOTHING done before Mom and Dad get back!

“RACE YOU!” I shouted as we made it to the very tall grass at the Upper End!

“Okay, you’re on!” Kit replied as he left me in the dust.

Cough, hack, sneeze, and cough!  I stood there rubbing the dirt out my eye with one paw then the other.  Finally I lay down and rubbed both eyes with one paw.

THERE I can see again!  Up I jumped following that youngster as fast as my beaglie legs can carry me!

Up we went, down we went; suddenly then we were there!

Kit got there first sniffing all around the base of the trees looking for mice holes, I sniffed around looking for news!

I don’t eat mice.

I don’t eat rabbits.

I don’t eat birds.

I don’t eat chickens…Kit and his Mom eat chickens.  They REALLY like chickens…for lunch…dinner…supper…breakfast…SNACKS!  Anytime, really.  Besides chickens are easy to get—all they have to do is go down to my sister’s house hang out in the pasture with Romeo the horse, or in the corn field next to the yard and wait.

If they wait long enough one of those crazy silly birds will come scratching along looking for bugs, or a nice place to take a dust bath and BAM!  The fox have FOOD!

That’s why Rocky Chaco Man and Black Dog hang out in the yard wherever the chickens are.  Rocky and Black Dog take a very dim view of fox capturing and eating chickens.

A VERY dim view!

Out of twenty chickens the fox have snacked on 6 over the course of 6 months.  One a month.  That’s all they feel it’s worth almost getting caught by Rocky Chaco Man the Rottweiler!

Rocky says one a month is TOO much!

See the fox wait until Rocky and Black Dog get to go for a ride with their Mom.  Going with their Mom is a HUGE wonderful treat.  When the two dogs are gone, then one of the fox, either Mom Fox or Kit slip into the yard and SQUWAK it’s chicken for dinner, or lunch, or supper, or breakfast, or just a nice SNACK!

I try to reason with them about NOT taking the chickens…the chickens are pretty much my friends, as much as the fox are, but they don’t listen to me.

Sigh!

Anyway…here we are in the forest at the Upper End.  Having a quick adventure, because we MUST get back before Momma Fox wakes up, and then I had better be way back home by the time Mom and Dad come back from their drive!

Oh!  And we HAVE to be over the little creek BEFORE it starts to rain!

That’s a must!  If we don’t get over the little creek before it starts to rain we won’t be able to do the other two AT ALL!

  1. Hey, Boom, what a valiant reason to be out there to help chickens. Love your total brave Sherlock heart! Now get to getin’ before it rains…over the creek..and river…home to treats.
