For several days we had thousands of Canada and Snow Geese landing in the field next to our house
They were ever so much fun to watch, listen to their calls and hear the rustling of their feathers as they searched the field for corn. (We don’t own this field)
Then, either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning — all under cover of darkness
Stick figures appeared in the field.
Of course the geese didn’t land there—thinking these represented danger
Then during the night Sunday or under cover of darkness Monday morning the figures were gone.
We think it was some avid hunters trying to get the thousands of geese to fly to whatever field they were in so ….. well, you know the rest of THAT story.
Anyway…
(This is an old photo, but I loved the colors)
The geese are long gone…only flying over the field, not landing.
I stand outside and call to them as they pass over-head—“You can land on our farm. You are most welcome here!”
But they fly on.

I can only hope the geese were smart enough NOT to land in the field where the hunters were!

How very odd! The scarecrows are such an old fashioned idea too.

Probably a “You are welcome here” sign wouldn’t have worked either.

Yes…not fair. Sometimes we see them drive by and shoot out the window…send a little kid out to pick up the dead birds then drive away fast. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Darn, nothing against hunting, but that is just plain miserable. Killjoys! Hardly any geese here because every single thing is frozen. My friend had a grebe land in her yard because it couldn’t find any open water. They can’t take off from land so she had to take it to a rehabber until something thaws so they can release it in a safe place.

Oh, that is interesting! Winter is terribly hard on so many things.

That makes me a lot sad. I know we have to eat but give the geese guns too and make it fair.

Few years ago we had snow geese land in a field across from our house. First time. They came back the next day.. I heard shots and looked out to see a guy shoot 6 from the truck. The driver stopped in the road . Then the shooter got out run out to the field and gathered up the dead ones. I called the Sherriff. They got here and took gun from them. He came and ask me what I saw. To this day there had not been one goose of any kind land in that field. They will in the next field. Hunting is ok,but do it legal and not from the road out of the vehicle. And it was in march and not legal time. GRRR.
Hope your birds come back They are wonderful to see. All of you have a good week. Sharon Drake south central kansas

We had sandhill cranes land in Stella’s front field one year. I heard them one other time but they passed us by :-(.
