Thankfully the Canadian Geese have found our corn fields, although methinks the picking might be slim after the 196 cows in December.
Terry says he is going to disk up the cornfields soon, this will stir up the feed and knock down the stalks, which, hopefully will bring in more birds.
The day was a tad chilled, but still Boomer, Mindy and went for wee walk-about seeing what we could see, stretching our legs and filling our minds with something besides toasting by the wood stove
The Sand Hill cranes have found a lovely spot at the Upper End to rest and search among the cattails for tidbits to eat
(I didn’t let Mindy go that far with Boomer and I. We left her at the the shed with Terry.)
This is way too far for a kitty cat to go, but not to far for a beagle and a human 🙂
We made the round trip, following the farm roads by the now dormant fields, then came back home to walk down the long lane to go get the mail. While doing so I saw a hawk coming in for dinner.
The little bird lived another day, alerted by the camera snapping human, not even realizing the Black Horseman of the Apocalypse was about to descend into it’s little bird world.
Then home again, camera on one side, best beagle pal on the other.
(Yes I wear short and flip-flops most of the time. It has to be REALLY cold and/or snowy for other shoes and long pants.)
Your friend on a western Colorado farm,
Linda
Love seeing your pictures of the Canada geese and Sand hill cranes! We have both flying over head, but do not land in my cornstalks. Flip flops and shorts!!! I was out this morning bundled to my ears just to walk out to my new house going up and dern-near froze!! I don’t handle the cold well at all anymore. Glad the little bird got away from the hawk, to go on living for another day!
Blessings!

I’m glad you can have a quiet, peaceful day every once in a while. I’m also glad you were able to help the little bird avoid being dinner for the hawk!

Seems cold for flip flops but maybe not the shorts. I don’t like my feet cold. Nice walk though. We don’t have flocks of Canada Geese but the Snow Geese and Trumpeter Swan love the corn fields

We have had large flocks of Snow Geese this year, the first time I remember seeing them. If the Trumpeter Swans would start coming WOW! Would I be a happy camper! 🙂

That last bit made me laugh. I wear shorts most of the year too, but I cover up when the sun’s too strong and my legs would burn!

I especially like the next to last picture, with the sun on the field and the mountains in the distance. It’s really beautiful! And you remind me a little of my husband…he wears shorts all winter long under his warm winter coveralls! 🙂

Why is it important for the geese to find their way there?

Because we are a no kill/hunting farm

lol – i’ve always been amazed that you can do your farmwork in flip-flops. i would have smashed or bloodied soooo many toenails or toes either bumping things or dropping things. and i’m a wimp about the cold – yesterday it got up to 25, and i was still in 2 pairs of socks and my age-old leg warmers.–suz in ohio

So far it hasn’t been too cold, maybe a day here and there. It’s feeling like March today.
