I was standing there feeling all amazed at this little hen when a huge dark shadow fell over the hen and me. Glancing up I saw…
“OWL! OWL!” the little hen screamed! “IT IS THE OWL! RUN!”
She picked up her feet and started to flap and squawk.
I raised my paw and pushed her down flat.
“OWL!” she sobbed.
“Shh, …it’s okay.” I soothed. “It’s just Ruth. Ruth is our friend. Ruth can help me help you.!
The hen fluttered and squiggled and squirmed.
“Owls eat CHICKENS!”
“Oh! Shut UP HEN!” Ruth yelled. “I’m not going to eat you, I’m not going to pick you up and fly you far away, I’m not going to do anything with you. JUST SHUT UP!”
The little hen fluffed up her feathers, shook my paw off, struggled back up into a standing position and gave Ruth and I a huge look of pure disgust. “I knew that”, she pouted…” The dog would have run if you were going to eat me.”
“Okay…now that we have that all straight…just what is going on? I don’t think I have ever seen a chicken way out here on the
edge of Coyote land, nor have I ever seen a chicken sleeping in a brush way out here where the
deer and the
raccoons roam. By the way, raccoons eat chickens also, did you know? I mean. You are a sitting duck. Er Chicken…er…you are LUNCH! No matter how you look at it!” Ruth flapped her wings and gave a couple of hoots.
“I know,” the little hen shuddered. “I know. By the way, my name is Ethie. Ethie means brave in chicken. I decided I needed to take a name that would lend me courage.”
In my first former life, I was named Little Miss, then in my second former life I was named Twiggy. But all those names would not help me be brave so I looked carefully into Chicken talk and remembered Ethie means BRAVE. I knew if I were to survive I HAD to be brave.”
“Well, Ethie, brave you are indeed.” Ruth put her left wing on Ethie’s back.
I just looked at the both of them standing there a little reddish-brown hen all puffed up looking important and a grouchy soft-hearted Big Horned Owl patting that little scrawny hen on the back.
Sometimes I am stunned at the turn my life takes.
