I’ve been wanting to take you on another one of the passes not far from where we live. This one is right outside of Ridgeway, Colorado
one hour from our house. It is called Owl Creek pass. Elevation is over 10,000 feet.

We travel through the Saw Tooth Mountains and around to the otherside of said mountains

There we stopped and played in the creek (and ate lunch).

Until we got to the Silver Jack Reservoir.

Some of our irrigation water comes from the Silver Jack, some from the Ridgeway Dam,

but most of the water comes out of Taylor Reservoir above Gunnison into Blue Mesa Dam.

We then headed home over Cimaron Pass into Cimaron, Colorado.

That’s the mountains we were just in, way back there in the back…those little blue peaks.
Wow! That was an amazing trip. Thank you for the beautiful photos. I’m going to have to go back and look at those again.

I just read your comment on my blog about duct tape and thought you might like some links to read about chicken saddles:
I did some posts a while back about the different kind of saddles there are for chickens. I like using the duct tape best.
Here is my chicken saddle post with the really neat links:

You changed the look of your blog!
Linda, you are not going to believe this, but the girls & I were going to camp at Silver Jack the last 2 days. Due to the t-storms in the forecast I opted to stay closer to home, near Blue Mesa.
Maybe you & Terry would like to join us for a day of 4-wheelin’ & site-seein’. We might finally be buying a house near Gunny, so our Autumn is going to be CRAZY, but eventually we are bound to meet up!
I’ve enjoyed your commentary on the change of season, BTW.

New look. Very nice. I wasn’t sure I was in the right place though (o: Did I ever tell you that we have camped in Ridgeway. I think it is a state Park??? We have been there like three or more times. Think Hubby caught a huge fish there and always wanted to try to do it again. We go to the country music show and chuck wagon there. Like it a lot…to bad it is so far away and gas cost so much now a days.
Love the ducks and goats (o:

I must say those are truly majestic mountains!
Here in PA we have lots of mountains too, I 80 is
truly a long Interstate Highway going East, and there
are plenty of mountain passes on that road.
My daughter lives south of us near Pittsburgh, and what
she calls “hills”……well lets just say I am glad I am
NOT a school bus driver….which is my daughter’s
occupation! They all learn to drive in the so called “hills”
down there and I am very glad I have just little
shall we say: curves in the road!!!!!

Nice pics! Seeing this makes us miss CO. My husband is from CO, but we now live on the east coast of the US. We usually go visit family in CO every other year, but we haven’t in 2 years now, and probably wont go this year. So thanks for the pics from our second home! -Lynn

Your pictures are great! I am flying into Aspen, driving over Cottonwood Pass and making the West Elk Loop in less that two weeks. We will be staying in Gunnison for a couple of nights and are considering Owl Creek en route to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Thanks for the inside view!

I sure enjoyed the pictures and narrative. They have a special meaning to me. I grew up in Delta in the ’60s. And my dad, Ben West, surveyed the Owl Creek Pass road for the U.S. Forest Service. (For those of you who may wonder, he did *not* want the road to go through that shale slide area but he was over-ruled due to budgetary considerations; the detour around the shale was considered too expensive.) We lived in a small camping trailer while Dad did the survey work and moved up the road as it progressed. Anyway, thanks for this posting. It sure brings back great memories — and makes me homesick for the Western Slope.
