The Big Storm Moves In—Cold Weather Settles In Until Monday Morning

The sky is cloudy and we are cold here today.  Terry is turning off the water until we warm up.  When he called the ditch rider to let him know the ditch rider said almost everyone, but the onion guys have turned off their water.  (This makes more work for the ditch rider — the canals get too full and then run over, that is why the farmers are suppose to call so the canals can be regulated.)

We have one field of field corn planted, two more to go.  It’s good we only have the one, if the seed rots in that one, Terry will plant it to pinto beans.  It would be best if the seed doesn’t rot, but this cold wet weather is just so iffy.

The 80 mph wind we just had knocked down three huge limbs

from our 90 year old cottonwood tree.

The 80 mph wind we just had knocked down three huge limb.  We were very lucky it didn’t hit the house or the chicken house.

The lilac’s and the sweet cherries froze last night.  It was 29* when I got up this morning.  All I have left in my yard (fruit tree-wise) are the apples.  Guess we will see if another killing freeze will get those also.

I do believe I sound rather bummed, sorry.  I’ll try to perk these posting up from now on.

  1. That´s why I admire farmers so much. Weather plays such a mayor part in how their “earnings” go, it´s always amazing to me, how they pick themselves up and try again next year. I wish I could send you all the sunshine we are having!

  2. Sure dodged the bullet on those limbs. Well, I guess you’ve got the weekend to get the chain saw out and get a headstart on next year’s firewood. Shame about the cherries and the lilacs, though.

  3. That’s terrible! I’m just glad it didn’t wreck any buildings……..it’s still a lot of work cleaning that mess up though. Hope your corn doesn’t rot….I know mine in the garden will if it’s too cold and wet…….I’d never really thought about field corn before.

  4. So SAD, Linda…. Makes me want to cry. YET—there’s nothing we can do to change Mother Nature.. Glad the limbs didn’t hit your house…

Take care –and hang in there. The weather HAS to get better for you.

  5. I hope your weather straightens out soon so you can finish getting the corn in. Those are some huge limbs that came crashing down, you are lucky no one was hurt. We have rain and cold here now too..just talking about starting up the wood stove again..we have been using the gas fireplace because it has been warm and most days we need no heat. 🙂

  7. You’re entitled to be a little down … you lost fruit and part of an old tree. You might lose corn. You stated it, mourned a smidge, and you’re moving on. Down here on the other side of the Mountains we had a beautiful sunrise. And although we’re supposed to get snow today, I’m still optimistic that I can get the potatoes going, and perhaps a few raised beds constructed.

Or, I might just go take a nap! Coop crisp mornings are almost gone for a while … someone has to take advantage of the last few!

Wellll… AFTER we take care of the goaties, chicks, bunny and quail. Vikki at http://vikkisverandah.blogspot.com

  8. GOOD LORD! What a wind storm that must have been! Thank goodness that limb didn’t fall on the house or cars … or you for that matter! Is the tree going to survive after such a blow? I hope so. And then to have the freeze come afterward, well, that just doesn’t seem fair. Hope that the corn doesn’t rot. All that work to plant it, I hope that it is germinating or whatever it’s called as we speak!
