Those that have raised onions and potatoes are now starting thier harvesting projects. The last thing to be harvested will be the hard-dent corn. This is the corn used for cooking (corn meal) and critter feed.
So far the weather is holding…we got very close to killing frosts, but we are now heating back up. Which is good, if you are trying to get produce in. Killing freezes tend to kill what you are trying to harvest.
The pick’n corn is at the hard-dent stage. Now we wait until all the moisture leaves the ear. If shelling corn is harvested wet it will mold. Last year we hauled our first load to the Elevator on October 20th. One month away.
Of course that doesn’t mean there isn’t lots still going on, just that we have reached our goal.
Linda

Farming seems such a hard life, full of gambles on the weather and other uncertainties, but full of beauty along the way. I admire you very much!

Nice looking corn! Glad you are getting done before frost. We missed it this time around and it is supposed to warm up for a few days now. Glad of that.

When I was young my Dad raised a lot of corn to have ground into feed for the cows. I remember hand picking it before we had a corn picker, he had two very large work horses named Bob and Prince and they pulled the wagon through the fields while we picked and throwed it in the wagon. I remember so many fond memories of my Dad and working with his horses, later he bought a tractor but the horses stayed in my mind for over 55 years.

One of the neatest posts ever, I still remember from last year. Your corn, singing praises. I hope we get the Praises of the Corn 2010 release. :o)

I am sure that you will get there with the final harvests. My God, you bust your guts out
and you should be rewarded with great crops for 2010. Then after the harvest, get the
Aberdeen Angus cows and calves in to finish off the job. It’s a hard bloody life on the land, but
once born to it, you always have that faith – you know what I mean. You and the Linda of A give
just vivid and realistic summaries of what “rural” life is all about – neither of you pull your punches.
All the very best for a successful season. Pity that your reports are not front page news in the major
newspapers of the USA and Canada. They might just let some people understand better.
Best wishes
Your Aussie mate

When I was a little girl, we’d go dove hunting in the fall. By late September the farmers in Missouri would have harvested their ‘hard corn’ and we’d gather up the ones just laying around with permission. We had special place on a local lake that we’d visit and feed the year round ducks.
Congrats on bringing in a good crop this year.
