Cows and Cornfields Do NOT Mix

Last night was an adventure.  One of these got left behind as the main herd was moving down the road in front of our farm.

She knew what she was doing as she headed right for the corn fields.

NOT A GOOD IDEA!

You can get lost in a corn field (of which we did—we lost her).

We could hear her thrashing around breaking the stalks tromping up and down the rows.  She would get to one end see us and take off running back inside.

Cows are NOT graceful, nor are they careful where they put thier feet…they just RUN!

What a mess.  It was spitting snow, rain and sleet, and the wind..I sure wished I had something over my ears.

Finally between all of us we got her caught and stablized until the cowboys could come get her.

The corn field is a mess.  The wind we are having is pretty much twisting up the stalks and the cow helped crush some of them the rest of the way.

I didn’t have a chance to take and photos…the chase was on and shooting a photo would have been in bad form, let me tell you.

Anyway…maybe soon…everyone keep your fingers crossed…we can get the corn harvested!

Linda

  1. Oh dear….we move cattle tomorrow. 🙂 We are in the same boat with our sunflowers as you are with your corn…it rained…snowed..snowed again on them. It is now cold enough and they are getting dryer…should be able to finish up soon. Hope you are able to do the same.

Stop by and say hi. 🙂

  2. Hi Linda, Oh My—what drama you had…. I’m sure the cow was scared to death also–while doing all of that destruction… Glad you all finally caught him…. Did he do tons of damage to the corn??? I’m so very sorry –for what you are going through. Hope you get the corn harvested soon.

    Hugs,

  4. Oh no!! Now i under what my friend’s husband means when he says most cows are half bovine, half donkey* (* means the more pleasent name for the creature has been substituted to keep your blog family friendly.) 🙂 He grew up on a dairy farm in NW WA.

Hoping everything goes well with your corn field for harvesting this weekend! I can only imagine the relief you and your family will feel after that task is completed.

  5. Your adventure last night reminded me of the times I used to spend playing running up and down cornfield rows. I was small enough the corn stalks seemed like trees and I felt like I was in a forest. When I got tired I would rest and play with ladybugs. Ahhh… such fond memories. 🙂 But I was careful to stay in the ditch between the rows and didn’t damage the corn. Your poor cornfield. Glad no one got hurt and that you caught the cow. Hope you get the corn in soon. Stay warm in all that cold weather.

  6. That experience almost rivals my shipping day experience of the calf on the loose in town! I do wish I had grabbed my camera when I headed out to chase it down!
That had to be exasperating to hear that old stinker of a cow tromping thru the cornstalks and knowing what damage she was doing!!
