(Cockleburs)

Years and years ago we were in charge of keeping the canal bank free of over-growth.  So we did… we planted grass, watered it up, waited for it to get a goodly size and put the cows out to graze on it. Magic occurred….the sides were free of grass, weeds didn’t take over and every spring we went out and burned off the trash.   We were happy, the cows were happy and the ditch riders were happy.

Then the ditch company discovered the joys of weed spray.  They were so excited and happy…. they could spray out the grass along their many miles, and miles of canal and ditch banks.

(Yellow Thistle)

So spray they did!

They were right!  No more grass!  Not a sprig anywhere…but in its place came

Stickers!

And other noxious weeds.  Beats me.

  2. That is why I’m glad to see at least some of the folks here still burning off their ditches. Unfortunately all those people that “move to the country” (which by the way used to be pasture) and over graze it and never take care of it now have led to tons of tumbleweeds and blowing dirt. Sigh…..

    Love the car show pics!

  3. Those are the worst weeds..and hard to get rid of too..round up a couple times a year..but the grass sounded like a much better solution to me..and burning..it burns off the weed seed. Progress is not a good thing sometimes:(

  4. We had thistles in our last garden – it took us several years to get rid of them, digging them up, using the strongest weedkillers we could get our hands on. We also had stinging nettles in the same patch of garden, so you had to be very careful not to get scratched or stung when weeding!!

  5. Cockleburs and thistles were the bane of my existence growing up. Dad said we had to get rid of them, which is almost impossible. It’s too bad the ditch company couldn’t leave well enough alone.
