We took a short break (four days) and headed to the plains of west Texas for the Cotton Harvest.
Terry and I have always wanted to see a cotton harvest so a really wonderful blog friend, emailed and said: “COME ON DOWN! We have started harvest!”
Since she owns huge farms, of which she sharecrops out, she talked to her renter to see if we could come watch the harvest. He also said “Come on Down!”
So we did!
We started out in a huge snow storm.
The following is a series of photos as we crossed the Million Dollar Highway into Durango.
This is part of the Million Dollar….
Here is a snow tunnel in a huge avalance area. Several people have lost thier lives at this place. The snow tunnel works like magic.
This is Silverton. There are three passes from our house to Durango, Colorado….Million Dollar, Molas and Coalbank.
The views are amazing and the roads were a mess.
But from Durango on into New Mexico we had good weather and dry highways.
This is New Mexico.
The wind started blowing in the afternoon of the day before we left the plains of west Texas, so going home we drove all the way through Oklahoma into Colorado in a huge dust storm.
Then back at the mountains we drove home again in another storm.
But we are back now.
The corn is starting to be harvested around us so Terry is on his way to have the corn tested to see if we can start.
I’ll blog about the harvest tomorrow.
Linda

Gorgeous pics! I’d be scared to death to drive those icy passes. But sure is beautiful country.

I would be scared to death on those snowy roads…but hey…it was sooo beautiful. Ty says he has had lots of snow up in Fairplay…he has not been good at taking pictures though.
We are suppose to be driving across the plains East to KC for Thanksgiving. The weather may stop us though.

Linda, so glad you and Terry could come for a visit and see the cotton harvest!! It was great fun having you here. We have had so much wind that harvest has come to a standstill. The cotton just blows around after gotten off the stalk.
Sorry you had to get a taste of our sandstorms! But do come again, my friends. Your pictures of the million dollar highway are gorgeous..especially the one with the light shining on the road. Also the sunset, beautiful!
Good luck on the corn harvest, hope all goes well and you don’t get too much wet weather till it’s out.
Blessings!

Yay, Road Trip! Booo, snow! The scardest I’ve ever been in a car was driving over wet Colorado passes, and that was in June. I’m a California weather wimp.

Some of that is familiar country. I’ve been on those roads. Glad they added a snow tunnel to that bad patch. I’m also glad you made it there and back without incident. NM is not my favorite place. At least the north part, and the west part. Never been to the south part. Looking forward to the cotton harvest report.

I’m glad you made it to Texas and back safely, even if the weatherman didn’t cooperate. I’m glad I didn’t have to drive through any of those storms. I hope your corn harvest goes more smoothly this year than it did last year.

Beautiful pictures, Linda. I learned about snow tunnels. I never heard of them before, being an Oklahoma person!! I’m glad that you were able to see a cotton harvest. When I was a child in Arkansas it was picked by hand. Thank goodness times change!! I’m glad you are safely home
