My Friend, Robin

I have a little Robin who helps me garden.

It took me awhile to understand that no matter what part of the yard I am in, he is there with me.

He is very happy when I’m watering as he can then find big fat worms, but even if I’m weeding he hops along beside or behind, or maybe just over in the other bed seeing what it is he can find…food, nesting material, who knows…something.

He is so tame I have even been able to get a photo or three of him.

For me that HUGE…I can’t ever seem to get a bird photo.

I’m pleased to introduce you to–

Which always reminds me of the the song -WHEN THE RED ROBIN COMES BOBBIN’ ALONG

(written by Harry Woods )

Sung by–Al Jolson, Mandy Patinkin, The Osmond Brothers

When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob Bobbin’ Along

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along, along

There’ll be no more sobbin’ when he starts throbbin’ his old sweet song

Wake up, wake up you sleepy head Get up, get out of your bed

Cheer up, cheer up the sun is red Live, love, laugh and be happy

What if I were blue, now I’m walking through,

walking through the fields of flowers

Rain may glisten but still I listen for hours and hours

I’m just a kid again doing what I did again, singing a song

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along

There’ll be no more sobbin’ when he starts throbbin’

There’ll be no more sobbin’ when he starts a throbbin’ his old sweet song

Wake up, wake up you sleepy head

Why don’t you get up, get up, get out of bed, cheer up

Live, love, laugh and be happy

What if I were blue, now I’m walking through fields of flowers

Rain may glisten but still I listen for hours and hours

I’m just a kid again, doing what I did again, singing a song

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along

Along, along, along, along, along.

  1. Oh how neat… What a nice little friend you have, Linda!!!!! I had one in early spring –but he was not a friend. He would wake us up really early in the morning pecking on our sliding glass doors…. We put big pictures of a hawk on the windows and that finally stopped Mr. Robin from the pecking… We don’t like THAT kind of an alarm clock… ha

    Have a great day.
    Hugs,

  2. He is very gorgeous- we have some birds that frequent our yard … but they like us better when we leave food out for them! We also have a few hummingbirds that entertain us – so much fun!

  3. Very nice! We have squirrels here on campus that are so tame that if you stand in one place for any length of time they will come up to see if you have any food for them.

  4. Robins are very welcome in my yard, too. I have a huge mulberry tree that they love and try to protect from the jays. There are plenty of berries for all, but you wouldn’t know it. When Bob and I used to raise baby birds for Wildlife Care, we learned that unlike other babies, that will stop eating when they’re full, baby robins will just keep opening their mouths and taking whatever you poke down them. Our first fledgling robins were so fat they couldn’t get off the ground. We had to keep them a couple more weeks and put them on a diet. The old Italians up in the foothills around here actually have a recipe for robin with polenta.

  5. That is so adorable. It’s like the rook in the book The Secret Garden. I hope you and your older granddaughter have enjoyed reading that book together at least once.

That song is one of my favourites…i sing it everytime i plant seeds. Seems to make the time go by faster. 🙂

  6. Great post!! and pictures. I have a bird that sings to me (well we whistle back and forth) when I’m out in the morning but so far I have not seen him so I don’t know what kind of bird (except friendly) he is…

  7. I wonder who brought that for you? They say people who have passed on ‘bring’ things to you, birds, bees, butterflies. Im pretty sure my Dad brings me yellow butterflies.

  8. It is pleasure to meet Robin. There are lots around here (at Mother’s) that are the last birds to go to roost at dark. We have enjoyed sitting outside and listening to them. Thanks for the song, I had forgotten some of the words.

  9. Now i’m going to have that song in my head all day. I miss robins. For some reason they don’t come to our part of California but I remember back east they always assured us that spring was on the way. How lucky you are to have such a nice friend.

  10. Great pictures! I had a robin that followed me around when I would water when we lived in NC and once I noticed him/her feeding a young robin as well. Didn’t get any decent photos though. You did a great job!

  11. I love to see the Robins, I went on the bike path this morning for a high powered walk and saw a Robin that stayed there looking at me until I was within 5 feet of it!

  12. In the couple of full sunlight pictures, your friend seems (by her plumage) to be Mrs. Robin, not Mr. The Secret Garden is on my top 10 list of books ever, the European robin in that story is the perfect garden friend like yours.

  13. What a wonderful garden companion, Linda! It always make the mundane work of weeding a bit more pleasant when you have someone to keep you company. You got some great pictures of him. I have a garden companion…a little black cat! Midnight will chase my hands as I rustle them through the flowers and weeds. Happy gardening/birding!
