Signs of Spring March 5, 2014

SpringsThe tiny little bits of fluffy green are the alfalfa plants waking up from a long winter’s sleep.

Terry starts disking today, which means Mr. Davis will be moving his cows out — probably this week end.

The farm work has to start now so the ground will be ready for water on April 1st.  The ditch company turns the water into all the canals the last week of March.  Therefore, ground work MUST begin now.

The cows have gotten so use to Terry and I riding or walking out to check on them they don’t even get excited enough to move.

Come on Number 22, you need to move over!    Scoot!

cow-e  That is close enough!  Now Scoot!!  Clap, clap!  Sigh!

Finally….

She turned  and moseyed on into the corn field!

Fences

In two years these little cuties will be back, ready to have some little ones of their own.

As you can see, we will be fixing fence as soon as the cows leave–they are a tad hard on them.

Off now to get some outside work done.

From a western Colorado farm,

Linda

  1. I envy you the dry land and blue skies. We do have weed seeds popping up and the trees have buds swelling. I cannot wait either. My property was bare land six years ago and I landscaped it all by myself including the lawns. I love color in my yard.

  2. It’s wonderful to see those bits of green poking up. You’ve obviously done a great job of letting the cows (or at least #22) get accustomed to you. I hope the warmer weather stays with you so you can get your work done before the water arrives.

  3. Well, Mr.Davis should be happy that his cows had a safe place to drop their calves in.
The cows were well feed with the stubble from the corn fields etc.
You and Terry should be happy – free manure for fertilising the paddocks and the removal of the leftovers from your last harvest.
So a win – win situation all around.
Still it will be sad to see the cattle go.

  4. How amazing that you actually have a date for the arrival of water! I am learning so much from your blog. Here, water falls from the skies at any moment, usually unpredictably. I’m realising how lucky we are.

  5. So glad you have enjoyed having the cows visiting this winter. I know you will miss them when they are gone…. BUT–once spring comes, I’m sure you will be just as busy enjoying many other things!!!! Life goes on, doesn’t it?

    Hugs,

  6. It is exciting to see green!! Here it is mainly my iris and chickweed!!! It was a cold, blustery day here, so stayed in until time to do chicken chores.

I know Terry is excited to ‘play in the soil’!! I know my hubby always was. Tired, but happy, campers!!

Love the cow and calves…you will miss them. Take care

    Blessings!

  7. I love those wide open views that you have. I can see that for once our spring is far more advanced than yours. We have crocus flowering already and bulbs shooting up at a crazy rate. To put it in perspective, the first crocus usually appears in mid-April. And we had so little snow this year that the grass is still green. It’s quite surreal.
