Gosh, summer is flying by. It wasn’t too long ago (around the Summer Solstices) the little birds were waking up at first light…singing sleepily to the lightening day. For us here (it’s all relative I know) that was 4:40 in the morning. Today I wake before the first cheep of the day, which occurs around 5:11 a.m. The Sunrise: 5:56 a.m.; it now sets at 8:39 p.m. Our Day length is fourteen hours and fort-three minutes.
On the Summer Solstice the sunrise was 5:48 a.m. and the sunset at 8:41 p.m. Making our day fourteen hours and fifty-three minutes. It doesn’t seem like much because the days are warm and lovely and long.
I’ve been weeding in the pinto bean field. I do it every evening. I’m 3/4 of the way through. I need to hurry as the pinto beans are starting to bloom and to shoot feelers. (The mosquitoes and hoards of other biting flying insects are having delicious time with me out there also!)
Once the rows grow shut the weeds will get to party. (Then Terry and I will just have to ignore them. It’s sort of hard because the pinto beans are planted in front of the house this year. Not only will we see the weeds, but so will everyone else driving down the road 😦 )
My lavender is just lovely! I had to share it with you!
The joyful sound of bees working with each blossom fills the summer air. When you move past the lavender plants the smell is of heaven. (I’m sure heaven must have a smell…don’t you?
My contribution to this weeks Good Fences and Gates over on Teresa’s blog is a decorative cement block fence going up Third Street Hill in Delta. This house was originally built by a really good Physician in our town.
For more fun and unusual fences head on over to the Run *A* Round Ranch and check what others have posted. It is surprising how many unusual fences and gates are out there in the big wide world.
Your Farm Friend on a lovely July Day,
Linda

Beautiful lavender.
It seems to get dark around 10:00 pm here. I usually sit outside until I can’t stand the biting bugs. Even with the torch lights on!
Not sure what time it gets light here, I’m still asleep! Yea, lazy days of summer.

I know how hard it is to ignore weeds, but there are definitely times when the only thing that can be done is to ignore them. I really like your sunset photo.

Several years ago I planted a 3 inch pot of lavender and now it is a jungle. It seems to grow all year and is my favorite herb. Heaven must smell of lavender.

You weed that field by hand???? Not sure there’s any other way, but it’s ENORMOUS. That lavender is gorgeous, and I’m with you Linda. That IS the smell of heaven as far as I’m concerned. Do you use your lavender to make anything? I try to harvest ours each summer and make sachet for friends and family. It’s tedious, in a way, but I love doing it.

Not jealous of the field weeding. Been there. Bugs And Sun, but what a feeling of accomplishment. Must be a good year for lavender. Mine is also beautious with that scent from heaven.

Your lavender is really pretty, Linda. Oh, I remember the “walking” of the soybean fields of my youth!! Weeds, bugs, heat and humidity of Iowa fields. Kind of glad I don’t have to do that anymore. Glad you are almost through with it.
Lovely header and sunset pictures. Blessings!

Yes. I’m pretty sure heaven smells like lavender. What’s the hat in the lavender? Is there a person in it?

I think I cried a little at your picture of the pinto bean field!! 😉 What a lot of work. I do enjoy weeding (although I don’t always keep up with it) but that is a LOT of weeding! Your lavender is amazing, and I love the red sunburst decoration (I am assuming it is a tractor part?)

I was thinking exactly what Daily Cure was thinking! You weed by hand??!!
I can hear your bees buzzing in the lavender. Something is not quite right at my house, as I don’t have any honey bees at all. It makes me terribly sad. Last year, there were so very many of them.
Interesting thought about heaven and scents.—-Humans attach so much emotional memory to scents and yet I never thought about heaven having any scent at all. Hollywood makes me think that heaven is white and sterile. What a wonderful thing to ponder! I think I’ll ask others what they think.

Lavender sounds like a great heavenly aroma to me, but Bill doesn’t like it much, so I guess I’d have to pick a different one (as I am kind of hoping to share the hereafter with him after all these years together here ;>)! I love your yard and the beans and everything … who cares about a few weeds. I see not all the mosquitoes are here in Alaska though!….just like in your yard, it’s beautiful enough to be worth a little discomfort though!

This reminded me that I need to plant some lavender. I used to have it and it grows well in our heat.

The weeds drive us crazy –but we mulched this year with special weed-preventing mulch… It is helping quite a bit –but there are other areas where we can’t mulch where the weeds seem to take over. Oh Well–we just do the best we can! Love your lavender –and I’ll bet it smells tremendous!
What do you use to prevent bugs from biting you? We spray with Deet and/or use the clip on bug repellent thingies… Both do okay –most of the time…
Have a great day, Linda.
Hugs,
Betsy
