Dragon Fly and the Corn Tassel

This beautiful Dragonfly was resting on top of the corn tassel, so I captured it for time and eternity with my camera.  Now I am sharing it with you.

Beautiful Baby and Grandpa

We have photos of Grandpa sleeping with Bladen and Linkin, so I just couldn’t pass up one of Grandpa sleeping with Tallin. (Although, there are others already posted on the blog.)

Pinto Beans (Red Beans)

The beans are starting to get ripe.

When ripe comes to pinto beans the leaves of the beans start to turn yellow and the pods have purple strips. Once that happens it is time to pull the beans for harvest.

Terry will pull beans sometime this week, after which they will lay in the field until all the leaves have fallen off the stems and the stems are dry.  Then he will bring in the combine.

I will keep you posted.  The Harvest Season has begun!

Free-Range Chickens-Three Months Old and Loving It!

The chickens are learning everyday that being ‘out of the box’ is wonderful!  There are bugs to eat, grasshoppers to catch, and green things to peck on.

That taking a bath can be very rewarding. (This rooster just finished fluffing around in the loose dirt, and was resting when I took his photo). He was a little startled by the flash.

Even if most of the girls “hens” look alike their personalities are very different.  These two are part of ‘group’ that likes to follow me around, just in-case.  Just in-case I stir up a grasshopper, or pull a tasty weed, or happen to be working in the yummy tomato bed….

The flash on the camera is always a bit of a shock.

As you can tell, Polk-Dot Boss has molted all his feathers (and dots), a rather sad thing for me.  I can still tell him apart as he is the one I can pick-up, the other one tries to peck me, and the third one squawks and runs away.

Summer Suppers

One nice thing about have kids living close by is the fact that they live close enough to come for supper.

Mowing the Lawn

The rain is a good thing for the lawn.  It takes me an hour on a riding lawnmower, and even longer to water it.

SUNFLOWERS

A neighbor at the end of our country mile is growing sunflowers.  Sunflowers are new to our area, so there is only about 10 acres being grown.  It is going to be interesting to see how harvest goes and if more are grown next year.

Car (Salvage) Collection Auction

One thing farmers love is good sale, but it also looks like ‘car guys’ like a good sale also.

A neighbor of ours who is a salvage/collector/???   held an auction.  The road was packed with interested car part buyers, making our little farming area hum with big trucks and assorted vehicles from local and out of state purchasers.

Farming is NOT an 8-5, Five Days a Week Job

All Farmers must have been chickens (or birds) in a former life, for work begins at dawn…..

then ends at dark.

And sometimes that statement isn’t true, for if the water is short, then it has to be changed DURING the night.

Also, if the hay is cut, and the dew is JUST RIGHT, then out into the night the farmer goes so the perfect hay bale can be made.
