Meta Mae (Hill) Brown’s Table

folded-table

This is Terry’s grandmother’s table.  It came with them from Fort Scott, Kansas, to the farm we now live on.  (We bought the farm from the estate).

I fell in love with the lovely little table the very first time I saw it, but I had to wait for 35 years to buy it from Aunt Benita’s estate.

Now it lives in our house under the photo I inherited, from my mother, of my Great Grandmother, Grace Elizabeth (Hubbard) Wootton and my grandmother, Ruth Love (Wootton) Thomas.

The table is a neat little flip-over, with a snap to hold it open on one side.  I just love it!

I also find that I am attracted to the Victorian Era, so I thought the two would go well together.

  1. It’s a very lovely table – and I love the old photograph. How fortunate you are to have that of your Great Grandmother and Grandmother.

I love Terry’s Grandmother’s name. Mae happens to be my middle name as well. It’s not a name that’s common and usually belongs mostly to older folks. Guess that’s saying something about me 🙂

    Have a great day ~

  2. What a gorgeous table. I can see why you would have fallen in love with it. The pic of your grandmothers is absolutely priceless. I don’t know what it was about pictures from that era but I think they are just beautiful.
We loved having Larry over for Thanksgiving. We were very glad he was able to make it.

  3. Those are great! I especially love the photo! How wonderful to have that treasure in your home to enjoy always! I have a photo of my “adopted” grandma in her swim suit – she was one of three ladies that were the first lady lifeguards in the USA. I LOVE it! And since I was a lifeguard for many years… it means a lot to me!
(An adopted grandma is a lady that my family just took in to be our own! My mom was an Avon Lady and she came across this old women who had now one visiting her or taking care of her. So my mom brought all of us kids (me and my three brothers)over to her house and we loved on her every week until she died! I loved her.
    ahh, good memories.
    thanks!

  4. Such beautiful wood in that antique table heirloom!

I, too, love the variety of furniture from days gone by!
We are so fortunate to have received 2 lovely marble topped end tables from my MIL when she no longer lived on her own amd quit housekeeping. Such treasures to pass down to our own kids some day, I hope!

I just had a lovely large old photograph restored and re-matted and framed of my husband’s grandparents.
    MORE TREASURES!

  6. Oh Linda! What a gorgeous table and wonderful photograph! So the little girl in the photo is your grandmother who loved Lady Astor! It was neat that I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your comment on my post about Lady Astor, and to find the photo here when I logged on! I am kind’ve wound up right now about interesting historical women! 🙂 It started with Susan at This Irish Photograph telling about Gabrielle Petit, a Belgian woman who was executed at 23 for being a spy for the Allies in WWI. Then Nalley Valley had a post on Mittie Bulloch, Teddy Roosevelt’s mother, and the possible inspiration for Scarlett O’Hara (I had read about her before, though). Then I came upon the piece about Lady Astor and then Constance Markievicz! I think I need to hit abebooks and amazon for some books right now! 🙂

Loved this post! It was wonderful seeing your precious treasures…the table and the photograph of two important women.

PS I’m sorry I haven’t sent you the chapter yet….I will, I promise!
