One Very Nervous Rooster

I don’t know if getting rid of the other rooster was a good idea, now this one has turned into a nervous rooster.  And he wants to attack!  Not good.

Also, he has trouble keeping track of the girls (too many hens for one rooster).

I feel sort of sorry for him, but his need to attack is a problem.  So far Terry and I are the biggest roosters, but real roosters fight dirty.  He waits until someone has their back turned or their head down gathering eggs and he flies at you.  Bad bird!

I’ve smacked him in the head with my flip-flop the other day and Terry had to smack him in the head with a stick.  With summer coming….and little grandchildren who play outside…

I’m going to have to either calm this bird down or give up on the idea of home grown baby chicks.

  1. My son was two last summer. We grew out a brahma rooster. About the beginning of september, the rooster got big enough to start trying to assert himself, and my son being the smallest bore the brunt of it. One of his first sentences was “big chicken hits” in two year old slur.

  2. We may wind up doing the same thing with Jed (our rooster). He’s started doing the siff-legged, aggressive walk and loud clucking when we go out, which usually means an attack is the next step, and around here they get one chance. I don’t even care about homegrown chickies; I just like the sound of a rooster. But not at the expense of watching my back at every turn when I go out to feed my girls. 😦

  3. I am so sorry you are having trouble with your rooster. John Henry and Elvis get along really well and each have their group of hens. I have about 15 young roosters out of the chicks Sister hatched. I let them run free in the yard for now but they are soon going to a new home (someone’s freezer). I think I am blessed my roosters are so nice and don’t attack. Now they will go after Fred the turkey if he gets in their pen. I can go in and feed and pick up the hens and they don’t mind at all… right now anyways. Hope you find a happy rooster as they are such enjoyment to have around

  4. Would it work to get the other rooster back? I have memories of being a little girl visiting some ones farm and having the crazy rooster come after me. Yikes!

  5. Our red rooster was mean too and he ended up in the stew pot. One option would be to keep your red hens and get a rooster of a gentler breed. Some of our mixed hens are our best layers.

  6. Sorry about your rooster issues…….they are so handsome but they can be such a pain in the butt!! I have one big guy in my henhouse. He gets to stay until he doesn’t play nice and then he’s dinner 🙂

Hope he straightens out for you –

  7. Oh girl, I have horror stories of roosters from when I was a kid. Still have some scars on my back. They were horrible. My mom whacked one off my back with a metal rod… but it barely phased it! My dad gave them to some field workers… to eat! But we did have one HUGE rooster that was more like a dog! He tried to protect us kids from the mean ones and acted as a watch dog when someone came down the drive way… he would get on top of thier car and crow until someone came out of the house. He was AWESOME! But I don

  8. I finally gave away my last rooster. Me and him had it out each time I walked into thehen house. Got tired of fighting for a few eggs. If you keep him in a pen you might do better for you and him. lol Great looking place, love the pictures.

  9. I am sorry. Can you find out if someone else has a different rooster? I know alot of people put them on Craigslist. You could swap him for a different one and see how that one works.

  10. I have found that having one rooster is difficult. They do tend to get human aggressive. If there is another rooster around they will concentrate on him. I currently have 4 roosters and none of them are a problem.

I will just separate any roosters that I don’t want fathering chicks in the spring.

  11. I wish I could loan you my rooster, Mr Fluff. He is the biggest powder puff! He isn’t red though. He’s some sort of Cochin cross. But as gentle as they come! And all his semi siblings are sweet and gentle too. So maybe it would help. But we are too far away…

  12. My mother likes to tell the story of her rooster Rufus. Her mother had to come into the house by whatever door Rufus wasn’t guarding and the mailman wouldn’t deliver. The only one that Rufus didn’t attack was her father. Rufus had a lot of respect for my grandpa. Wonder what he did? This is the very reason we just bought our hens sexed at the feed store.
