I will be soooooooooo happy when this burn season gets over! For some odd reason most of the farmers around us have decided to burn off last years’ crops instead of grazing them off.

I’m sure there would be many sheep and cattle people who would have loved to have the feed!!!!
We graze and then plow under. In an effort to keep our soil healthy we feel turning what is left from the cows (poop and corn stalks) into the ground reduces cost of purchasing fertilizer and adds body to our clay-like soil.

So until all the ground is turned under we will be plagued with smoke. This is what it looks around our house the last couple of days. Ugh.
Wow. So much for beautiful country living huh? Why would they burn what they can use? Looks like California in the summertime. YUCK!!

Hopefully it will be over soon and you will get some spring rains! Clay soil is a bummer, but it grows some great stuff, you are totally correct the natural fert and the left over corn etc will help improve your soil. It puts something back in naturally! 🙂

And its better for the environment than burning which goes straight up into the atmosphere. Good for you doing it the right way.

Wow, that’s pretty bad. I haven’t seen that kind of haze around here. I think most of the burning that’s going on right now around here is pastures, not cropland…

Wow! I really feel for you! Can’t do that here or the fire company will show up.

I just can’t imagine burning rather than turning free fertilizer into your soil. Yikes!

Thanks for the recent posts you’ve submitted. I really enjoyed the Steps in preparing a field for planting.
I am sorry about the burns. Wondering if because magazines and journals are reporting studies finding that burn is a way of increasing nutrients in the soil (the ol’ “if the Ancient Aztecs did it, it can’t be too harmful to us rational”) Maybe someday your state or county will outlaw it like they have where my family is from (No. ID) Sadly, it took a little girl dying of an asthma attack during the burning season for them to write and pass any legislation on it.
Good luck!

UGH, I can’t imagine all that burning, especially the way I have been having trouble breathing.
Kudos to you for doing it the right way.
