Wind and Rain

What a mixed blessing we are having.  We are still experiencing lots of wind (this sure is an odd year for wind).  And some pretty nice rain, which is good for our semi-arid region.

The hay is ever so close to first cutting, any day now (that is why we are getting rain ….chuckle  ),

but … sigh..

Rain-and-Hay

Here is what happens with a mix of tall alfalpha, heavy wind, and lots of rain.

Wind-and-Hay

The alfalfa falls over, sometimes twists on itself, and can even lay flat.

Oh well, we can still cut it, it just takes longer and it a little harder to do.

Have a Happy Memorial Day!      See you on Tuesday.

  1. When young I spent many evenings carrying 3 irrigation pipes at a time on my shoulders, through waist high alfalfa fields. The only thing I REAALY disliked about it, was that it was inevitable a big would crawl up your pant leg.

I can’t count the times I ran up to the house, with a fist clutching some portion of my jeans, trying to corral some roaming creature. Once it was an earwig than actually pinched me all the way up one leg, across my lower belly, and down the other leg. I never could catch him, but I sure saw every mark.

What I really miss is the steady, rhythmic chink-a-chink of the sprinkler heads on summer nights as I slept with my curtains blowing in the breeze.

    And the smell. Wonderful. 🙂

I loved seeing your pics and remembering. Alfalfa is not commonly grown here.

  2. Hi Linda,
They are starting to cut hay here . It has been a really nice 70’s temps all week here . My hubby is doing his bush hogging he has to do this time of the year for a big industrial plant . It sure has been nice and pleasant. But oh I dread July , when he does it again. I have to go with him because they don’t want him back in the woods by hisself . They are real sticklers about SAFETY !
I have never heard of Red Donkey pinto beans. I know it seems we don’t get good beans here . I used to like Lady McBeth’s but I haven’t seen them in years.Guess they don’t have them anymore.
You ask me about the roses a few weeks back. Well ! I think everone of them are deader than a door knob !!!
We had some really cold weather after I set them out.Maybe that done it.I CANNOT seem to grow roses.Got a Knockout Rose last week I am trying it in the front of the house.More sun there.
    Geeze ! I didn’t mean to write a book ! Bye !
