A sneaky nasty coyote slunk into the yard last night and scared all of us! Of course not me! I started hollaring real loud so Mom would hear and come out. Dad came out first and that scared the homely furry species of a dissoulte style of life based on raiding, killing and other uncivilized forms of behavior!!! Actually Mom never heard me and she never came out, but DAD did and that is all that matters.
We have a nice chicken coop, heated in the winter, fenced in run with a fenced over top so other animals can’t get in, (here’s some nice plans if you want to build one for yourself-Plans from BackYard Poultry Magazine)
Anyway, just to let you know, chickens get really sleepy at night…..really sleepy, I mean there isn’t a way to stay awake, the sun goes down, we go to sleep . That’s why we have to sleep in the house…to stay safe.
Now when Roo was here ( I still miss him) he would crow at night randomly to scare anything away that wasn’t suppose to be there. But since he is gone– that just doesn’t happen.
I wonder if the three mean hens ran him off? They are mean enough.
OH! Back to my story…
Anyway, coyotes kill more chickens and cats than skunks or raccoons, goodness they even kill stay dogs just for the sport of it! If you’ve never seen those lean-limbed, long-haried scruffy-tailed, yellow-eyed, slack-jawed, hungry-looking coyotes go here Coyote. There is a real good photo of one. Brrrr, shiver, shake, scary!
This coyote was skinny…I know cause I sleep by the window and when I heard the scratching on the side of the house I looked out and gave a sqwack of fright. I sure was glad Dad was outside ‘taking in the cool night air’. He likes to get up at night and check out things. BOY WAS I EVER GLAD!!!!!
That savage animal ran off! Just ran off. Mom was very concerned, the next morning. (Get that..the NEXT Morning!) We’ve been hearing them laughing and singing in the neighbors cornfield. Now one of them arrived at our house.
Mom said they were going to put up a motion light, good! Whatever that is! Keep those animals away!!!!

Honey, congratulations on being the one to alert your Dad and scare off the mean ol’ horrible coyote. You need a dog like me to take care of you girls. We miss our Roo too. but he was brave. A critter got him when he was protecting his girls. I was in the house or I would have saved him. Sometimes, Mom and Dad forget I’m in the house when they let the girls out. Honey, you have quite a diverse vocabulary, an assortment of words, a multiplicity of phrases. Maybe you read a lot on the sly. That makes you more sly that the coyote. It is a good thing you are more alert than your mom. 😀

Glad disaster was averted. Here in the east coyotes have a lot of domestic dog blood and they are big and aggressive…even take calves or kill weak cows. Dang em anyhow.

Good job in scaring off the coyote but I’m just thinking after looking at its picture, maybe if people fed the poor, skinny, hungry coyote it wouldn’t have to come after you chickens and cats and things. Coyotes have to eat too you know. Can’t help defending the underdog.

Fun update on Honey. It’s a mean world out there. Reminds me of the Bible verse of Satan prowling around (after us) like a roaring lion. Glad the chickens have such a safe environment.

Too funny. The donkeys (and my horse) at my inlaws do a pretty good job of scaring away anything that may come near their fence or the chickens, including my trouble making little bugg dog.

Just a suggestion but a rifle works way better than a motion sensor light! Once they find food and make a kill, they keep coming back again and again. We lost a rabbit and two cats to the nasty buggers last summer. Once you start using them for target practice when they show up, they don’t seem to find your place nearly as appealing. I know this sounds cruel but they can find plenty of things to eat in the wild without grabbing chickens, cats and rabbits off our decks and out of our yards! Although I hear from Road Runner (beep beep) that TNT works well to rid yourself of Wile E. Coyote.

Good for you Honey, you saved the day. I’m glad you are safe from the coyotes, stay inside at night.
We house-sat at a farm a few years ago and there was a pack of coyotes that liked to hunt field mice in the lower pasture. There were no nearby farms and we had no small animals about. They were totally dependent on what nature provided which is the way it should be.

I have returned from a really interesting holiday in FNQ. What a place – did all the usual touristy things except the reef trip. Unlike many others I had my share of coral in PNG and the resulting coral ulcers and when you get one of them, your love of coral disappears pretty fast!!!
What you need to keep coyotes etc out is a darn big dog – something like an Australian Blue Heeler – then there will be no problems in your chicken coop.
