Cold Here 51* Daytime Temperature +++ Freeze Warning Until 9:00 Tomorrow Morning

The storm brought snow in the rocky mountains, 8″ in some places.  The wind was the worst for us.  Some rain, but mostly wind.

Fall-Hillside

Our hillsides colored up wonderfully, though!

More-Fall-Hillsides

We are seeing reds and oranges that we haven’t seen for a long time.  The sad part about all this early freezing is many of the farmers in our area lost crops.  The yellow beans froze and many acres of the pinto beans.  The chopping corn froze and so did the pumpkins, and any late sweet corn. (Yes, there were a few fields of late sweet corn.)  Field corn isn’t hurt from freezing; in fact it helps the drying process along.  Onions can sometimes withstand the freeze if it isn’t too thick.

The growing season is done for alfalfa now, so we only got the three cuttings instead of four.  Four is nice, but three is okay.

DH is waiting for the field corn to get to 15 moisture, last week it was 18.  With this freeze we might be doing corn in a week or so!

  1. Bummer that crops were lost to an early freeze. I think we’re going to have a very nasty winter this year. We got 4 inches of heavy wet snow last Monday – the last day of Summer! And the winds the past few days have been horrific – 20 mph sustained winds with gusts over 60 mph day before yesterday – I found things all over the pastures that came from pretty far away. Almost had to tie a brick to the toy poodle to keep her from ending up in Kansas (just kidding but she did struggle in that wind!) Maybe we’ll have some Indian Summer days to look forward to in the next few weeks.

  2. Funny old world we live in. You get early frost in Coloradoand we are here in Spring but have already summer weather. The weather bureau predicts 33ºC (91Deg on your scale) for Brisbane. Already time to crank up the aircon.

  3. So sad that crops were lost. I makes me feel the way I feel when leftovers of fresh food in the fridge gets forgotten and rots. I just HATE that. I feel awful when I find it. Like I screwed up. Well, I guess I did. But at least in that case it was from mother nature and not just neglect! Hope you guys will do okay this winter.
