If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

(Peter Edward Doyle WWI–National Guard, my paternal Grandfather)
And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

(William Hobson Thomas, WWI my maternal grandfather)
From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,
From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

(Lester Allen Doyle, WWII My Father)
I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

Thank you, ONE and ALL, for my Freedom! I wear my poppy proud for all you have given to me!

Thanks for sharing the pictures! I like that song. I think we take way too much for granted in our country.

What a beautiful tribute you have placed on your blog to your family members of the Armed Forces. Magnificent indeed.
We, here, have just learnt that our Prime Minister flew secretly to Afghanistan to be with our troops for Remembrance Day. The fighting men and women should always be respected for what they do in trying to preserve peace and prosperity in this World we live in.
You are to be commended.

Linda,
I’m speechless……what an absolutely fantastic tribute to the men who served in your family. I can tell you are so proud as well you should be!
I agree with Megan – I too feel we as Americans take too much for granted in our country.
That also is one of my favorite songs 🙂

What a great and moving post. My Dad was in the Navy too. He was on the USS Oklahoma when it was bombed in Pearl Harbor. He survived and helped other sailors make it. He died from cancer when I was three, so I never heard all the stories. Mom said he didn’t like to talk about it… but time might have made it easier.

If the US army had not been there, life would look very different for us in Belgium today, I never forget that. So thank you for this post, and thank you for the men in your family that came to our rescue so many years ago. For those who did not now, the poppies come from the fields in Belgium during WWI, here’s a poem about them : http://artsandherbs.blogspot.com/2008/11/remembering-great-war-14-18.html
