The Joys of Retirement from Your ‘Other’ Job

The barn is sllllooowwwlllyyy coming along.  The weather is a big factor, either it’s snowing or way too cold to get out there and ‘do something’.

The other thing is Terry is doing this alone.  Which means, if it’s too cold, why go out.

(Terry used to work as a Lineforeman for the power company (37 years)  and he still farmed.)  He says picking and choosing when you go outside is real nice, real nice!

  1. Deb-He is excited about it also. He waited until he was 64 before he retired, thinking he could make it to 65. But politics at work and trying to do to rather demanding jobs did him in. Now, today, he has the winter off (except for whatever he wants to work on) and he can farm in the daytime instead of after a min. of 10 hour work day.

He is ever so much happier and so am I. I really like having him home on a daily basis.

Now when the lights go out, he smiles and says it’s someone else’s turn to get them back on!

  2. Boy, I BET he’s glad to pick and choose! Tell him thanks for all the years of going out in the worst for everyone else.

Nice barn! Looking forward to seeing the finished structure.

  3. Janice-The storm is all around us, but not right here. Which I’m really glad about. I have to leave the house at 5:30 in the morning to be to work in Paonia by 6:30 and I Do Not Want to Drive in Snow. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the night brings, but so far so good.

    Pam-Now I just have to get retired……

Faith-Thank you, I will. He will smile when I do.

Ed- Thanks, Ed. He really is having fun working on it…on his own time! 🙂

  4. I know how you feel, we got the upstairs of the barn pretty done, just painting but it is hard when we didnt get the heat installed because of the cold hitting and now we have to use propane to heat it.

  5. Terry has earned the right to pick and choose, good for him. The barn will be wonderful when completed. How do you dare leave him home alone to venture out on that roof?

  6. Ha, my husband, Randy, says the same thing. He retired in 09 after 24 years in the military, and has been extremely busy around the farm in the past 3 months, even though he doesn’t have a “real” job now. But he’s been doing side jobs and making good money since he retired. And I have to be out the door every day at 5:30 to go to work in Washington – I wish I could retire, too!! Randy’s looking for a “normal” job, still, just for the steady income… So, we know what you mean about being too cold to work outside. Randy wanted to put a roof on our chicken pen, but hasn’t done it yet. There’s more important inside jobs to do!!!

  7. It IS nice to have the option of whether to go out or not. Clear skies don’t necessarily mean warm. We are predicted to drop below zero again big time. Rather have snow.

  8. What a nice payback after all those years of working round the clock with a job and farming! Bet he is enjoying every moment he does get to work on the barn!

  9. Yep – picking and choosing when he wants to work is great – it’ll be a nice barn when he gets through. I’ll bet that metal is freezing to hands working on it tho! Some things you can do with gloves and some you can’t!

  10. Your husband has my thanks too for all the hard and dangerous work doing line work. I appreciate all the people who work so hard here in California to keep us supplied with power when the lines go down. That work is akin to being a fireman or police work. They don’t get enough credit or pay. The barn will be great!

  12. I gotta find me a retirement lovin’, barn lovin, country lovin’ whoever to enjoy that also. Or fix my things in this house that need tending to. Seems you guys have been getting lots of snow this year. I miss it. I know. That sounds like a crazy person talking. It is. 🙂

  14. Lisa-Your upstairs looks fabulous though. In fact it looks like the upstairs on my house. 🙂 I think winter will leave someday…and then we can all be very busy again.

This winter seems to be a really hard winter.

Julie-That is a very good question, one I ask him every time he works on it when I’m not home. I even stamp my foot, but it doesn’t seem to matter to him.

Lynn-Oh, I feel for you on leaving the house at 5:30 in the morning. I have to do that 3 days a week and that enough for me. The rest of the time I leave at 7. That getting up at 4:30 is the hard part.

I wish I could retire also. I am looking forward to the time when I can. We talk about traveling when that happens, but I think we are rather ‘rooted’ as they say. Still maybe we can do a week here or there whenever we want.

Leenie-22* here right now. With snow predicted for the next two days and then below zero heading over for several days after. Snow does warm things up.

I’ll bet Florida is wondering if we really are in a global warming spell right now. ( I wonder it also).

Michele-You are so right! Politics! The politics finally got to him, and knowing he had the luxury of retiring meant he didn’t have to put up with them anymore.

  15. Kath-And he enjoys hanging out with all his friends, or going to town with buddies, he even doesn’t mind going shopping with me as long as he can head to tool section.

I really don’t shop except for the occasional groceries, but we now go to the ‘city’ to just see what is happening and eat out. This is a huge change for us.

MoH-On very rare occasions I got to go with him on an outage. I must say I was major impressed at the work they do, on hot wires, with static electricity on the wire. And I enjoyed watching him climb poles, he made a cool lineman.

Vickie-The roof will be finished today. Then he wants to start on the walls. He had a huge dilemma on if he wanted to do the roof first or the walls first, then the weather took care of the decision.

When he gets ready for the walls we will have to cover them so the weather doesn’t warp the boards, put up a heater so he can get the boards painted and then get the siding on.

It’s all just so exciting and he is having great fun.

Diane-Spoken by a very contented retiree!

  16. Megan-Boy it looks like the arctic air is hitting everyone. You guys bundle up and don’t stay outside too long.

TinMarie-Today is Kimberly’s birthday and Blade is Saturday. We have the girls so he can have a party and a slumber party later.

I’ll be 61…I can hardly wait.

Linda-It is. Sometimes boring, but still nice that the have-to is gone.

Lucy-I’ll send you some. Or else I could send you some bitter cold?

  18. Jody-It’s nice isn’t it…to pick and choose.

Connie-I would settle for a January thaw 🙂 That would at least make the winter a little shorter. But only 7 more weeks until farming starts so that is something.
