Pruning the Lilac

Since Saturday was beautiful, not cold, 41* and not snowing, we decided now was the time to trim up the 90 year old lilac.

We removed all the winter damaged branches, all the suckers

Thereby, giving a new shape to a very old tree

Lilacs are really bushes, but Terry’s grandfather trimmed this into a tree.

I took some of the trimmed branches and put them into warm water in the house.

I want to do this as Far Side, Own a Morgan, and others suggested it to see if I can get some to grow roots.

If I can I will plant a few more bushes in the yard along the canal bank.

I will tell you about the canal bank in another post.

Monkey, the cat, liked to help me.  Sam and Fuzzy were way too busy to spend time picking up branches.

It is snowing here as I write this, big wet flakes.  It’s beautiful.  The flakes really aren’t sticking and even if they do the time of 20* weather is over.  The days are growing longer and longer.  I saw two robins yesterday.  I consider this a spring snow shower, bringing moisture to the high country from which we get our water.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Linda

  1. Happy Friday to you my friend, So you’ve got snow too, huh….ours was very wet and light with more promised tonight and the weekend.
I love lilacs and am so thankful we can grow them here-because so many other beautiful, fragrant ornamental trees and shrubs don’t grow here. I’m hoping to plant at least three bushes this spring/summer.
We’ve had such nice weather the last couple of weeks that now I’m pining for spring…oh well at least two full months to go. Have a wonderful warm weekend. Our friend T told me she has 80 degree weather right not-it just isn’t right!!! LOL.

  2. Pretty neat work with the “pruning” shears!!!
Looks like you have a possible new career path, should you so desire? However, I would prefer you to stick to the ranch life!
That lilac tree should really look great now when it starts to bloom in Spring so I am looking forward to progress reports on it.

Seems that the snow has gone from these pictures – sure disappears quickly. Spring looks like being early in Colorado and Autumn (Fall) weather has commenced here. Still warm days, when it is not storming (!!!) and the nights are cooling off – great sleeping weather. This February in Brisbane has been really weird – storms, humidity and reasonable nights. If only it could stay like this, without the storms, for 365 days, we would all be “happy little vegemites” – we eat the last mentioned item on toast. Not too many other nationalities like it – both taste and sight! I am completely unable to even attempt to describe it – maybe my good friends, Diane and Bill, will see this comment and have a go – I can hardly wait to see their attempts!!!!!

    How are the “chooks” surviving?

    Cheers

  3. Hi Linda, I have never seen a lilac that old —and one that has turned into a tree. That is so neat. Glad you are trimming it. It will be so pretty in spring/summer. You’ll have to show us a picture then also!

Looks like Monkey was a HUGE help!!! ha

  4. That is a monster of a lilac “bush.” That must have been quite a project to work it over after such a rough winter. Glad to hear the robins are making their way north. Seeing them cheers me like crocus blossoms.

  5. I cannot wait to see your lilac in full bloom. I am afraid to say that the deer have been pruning my lilacs. Winslow Homer is slacking in his guard dog duties! Have a great weekend.

  6. All of my lilacs are bushes, I’ve never seen one as a tree before. It looks great after the pruning, you should have gorgeous blooms this spring. Glad to hear your robins are starting to arrive, that a really good sign.

    Monkey is an adorable cat.

  7. Well….booooo….the lilac tree pics didn’t come up on my computer. I pushed refresh … usually that does it. Anyway…I LOVE lilacs and Arizona doesn’t raise them so you just know how how much I covet. Best smell in the world.

  8. I just love lilacs – mostly becasue they were my mom’s favorite flower as I was growing up. And that is just a beautiful = huge lilac tree! The photos of the actual flowers didn’t show up, but I do remember you posting some in the past and they were just beautiful. I hope it warms up for you soon and that your lilac tree blooms soon!!

A lil more snow, eh? We’re getting the rain showers today, enough to really cause some green down here. Very exciting!! Spring is around the corner!!
