A Tiny Bit of Green

Taking the advice of several of you I brought a bundle of twigs from the pruned Lilac inside and placed them in a bucket of water

I am waiting for the roots to appear and then I will take them outside and plant them.  But of course I can’t plant them until the weather settles and the ground warms up.  At the rate we are going now, I think I can plant them on Memorial Day.

Anyway, I want to plant them on the canal bank.

This is a main artery of the canal, of which we get our irrigation water. As you can see the mad, rushing, and roaring water has a tendency to eat away the bank. (All photos were taken before the last big snow storm.  The snow is gone now, melted with the rain.)

The canal runs right by our house and yard so I plant trees and bushes to protect the bank.

Since I need to cut down the ancient (un-pruned) Standard Delicious tree, the lilacs will fit on up the bank perfectly.

It is still raining here. Still muddy.  And cold 41*.   There is nothing we can do but wait. But just as soon as the ground is ready, every tractor in the land will be either ripping the soil or plowing.

Come on sun!

Linda

  2. Oh my God! Lindas of A and C.
Just sent the ‘ever disappearing’ e-mail and I am “gloating” about the beautiful sunny Autumn weather here in Brisbane ( and not before time I might add!).
I’ll soak in some of the sunshine while having lunch at the Cleveland Marina for you both.
Still with storage dams to hold the rain and melted snows, you will have water, if we are all next hit by droughts. One never knows with the ‘strange’ weather patterns the World is now experiencing.

I will carefully follow this lilac planting. The things one can learn, and I always was under the impression that lilacs were similar to tulips!!!
Cheers – the sun can’t be TOO far away?

  3. We’ve had several beautiful days, nice enough for us to work up our garden a bit, but the rain is on the way! We usually don’t get to plant here until Mid-April. I’m starting my heirloom tomato seeds indoors this week. Wish we luck. 🙂 Good luck with your lilac starts.

  4. I am so happy for youi that you got your cuttings to bloom. How exciting to have more lilics along the bank! Hope that the rain will stop soon. We had rain all day yesterday and it looks like it might be the same today. I think everyone could use a few good days of sun about now!
Thanks for you comment about doing to much. I am trying to stay balanced… but I do want it just done at this point. Don’t want to have plastic and paint cans to step over during this weekend!
I’m off to try and finish up~

  7. Hi there, So glad the stray dog didn’t eat one of the chickens! Also love the area where you’ll plant the lilac bushes~I’m planning on getting several this spring-when and if it ever gets here-probably be mid-late May. I love lilacs, as I’ve shared before, and now that I have a blank canvas I am going to have some fun. Stay dry and warm-it’s mighty cold here today with tons of wind.
    Hugs to you.

  9. Wow that is so neat that the leaves popped out like that! Rainy and damp here, cant go in the yard with out sinking and mucking up your shoes, the frost hasn’t gone out of the ground here yet so it just holds the melted snow and rain on top.

  10. The Lilac trimmings look great..hopefully you can get them in the ground soon. I would strip some of the leaves off and plant them pretty deep ..at least eight inches..that way they will have lots of areas to root from. They should do great..and it will be fun to watch..:)
