HELP! A Dog Tried to Kill One of the Chickens!

Honey Hen here. We have had an almost murder on the farm!  It was terrible I might say.  Just horrible.  It didn’t happen here, which I am ever so very grateful for, but it did happen down at Misty’s house.

Fuzzy had gone down to Misty’s to see how things were going.

(He stopped traveling down there for a long, long time after Checkers passed)

But he told me he missed seeing the little kids and he felt like he better help out Mom-Mom by guarding her place as well.

When he got down there he found out that a stray dog had been dumped out and was chasing chickens

Just as Fuzzy got into the yard the stray black dog got one of the black chickens in his mouth and took off down the road

Lucky for the black chicken and for Fuzzy the neighbor guy was out in his yard and saw the whole thing.

The neighbor guy took off running and caught the dog, just as he was about to have lunch.

This whole business just sends shivers up a hen’s spine don’t you know.

Well, anyway, the hen was saved, and the stray dog is also saved, he is now living with another neighbor way, way down the road, who has a fenced in yard.  (And the fence is one of those things that shock the dog if he tried to leave….YEAH!)

Anyway, Fuzzy told me he was really glad the neighbor saw everything, because otherwise they might have thought he was chasing chickens.

Fuzzy says he is just too old for the utter nonsense!

  1. Righto Linda – Action stations required!

That “stray” or dumped dog will strike again. That you can be assured of, just like the sun rising in the East and setting in the West.
There is one and one only alternative for that dog – I am sure you know what it is? Maybe that was the reason it was “dumped” – why didn’t they take the dog to a dog pound and have it “put down”?

Those “other” chickens/chooks shown that the “dog” struck at, appear to be some breeds of bantams???

Good to see the sun out in Colorado at last.

  2. Honey Hen, Fuzzy would never chase chickens. Dogs that chase chickens either do it because they are starving or they are predisposed to it. I’m glad to her that the black chicken is okay. She may not lay for awhile but it could be worse. Much much worse.

  3. Hi Linda, That was a close call for sure…. Glad your neighbor saved the chicken —and I’m also glad that the stray dog now has a home.

We had a wonderful Birthday celebration and got home today!!! I’ll post a blog tomorrow morning.
    Hugs,

  4. What a lovely story post! I’m glad Fuzzy didn’t get the blame. Good on the neighbour guy. I see Colin , the farmer boy, isn’t sympathetic towards dogs. Tut tut.

  5. Close call! My Grma hated chicken chasers and even worse chicken killers. She once tried to strangle the neighbors dog with her bare hands when it went after her chickens, her hands gave out so she wasn’t able to finish the job… she was 73 then, she is now 93.

  6. Ah – can’t help myself. Just returned from a rural “retreat” where friends live just north of Brisbane. I call it the Burrell “Hacienda”.
We have great times just reminiscing of our student days and then in either Papua New Guinea or the Northern Territory where we, I think, grew up from student to mature persons very quickly!

Commenter: Jodie Blue, please extend my heartiest best wishes to your 93 year old grandmother – what a gal! Once a dog has done what has been reported, they will do it again as sure as the sun comes up in the East and sets in the West.
Oh yes, I do love dogs when controlled, but rogue dogs are just like, US “coyotes” and Australian “dingoes” – never to be seen anywhere near live-stock of any shape or form. They are natural predators.

Yes, Actions stations are necessary. I will speak to Diane on her “tut tut” comment when we next meet for food, glorious food and wine, of course.
    Cheers
