Evening on the Ditch Bank

Another storm is blowing in

The wind is terrible 35-60 m.p.h., making trash in the ditches next to impossible to keep out.

The trash collects and starts to dam up the rows.  After starting about 22 tubes, we then walk the water through each row, making sure all the trash is removed.

Just before going in at twilight we check the tubes and trash cleaners one more time.

A strong cold front is supposed to hit here this evening with temperatures plunging into the high 40’s and low 50’s.

Another worry is that the alfalfa will freeze.  A mature stand  is fairly sturdy, but too much cold weather can harm it.

  2. Glad to see you’ve got corn planted…..too bad about all the blowing trash. We’ve got a storm moving in too……….it’s raining now and is supposed to blizzard later on. I hope it doesn’t. Are those what they call siphon tubes in the first picture?

  3. Terrible weather – you and Terry against the elements.
“Linda of A” has asked a question above which I was going to ask. Water out of the ditch into the fields, are those white pipes/tubes siphons? I presume to get them going once the ditch is full and the tubes placed into the water and then the field channel, you, well Terry, to get them going has to suck them all???? Just like petrol out of a drum to put into a tractor or car’s “gas” tank!
Will endeavour to keep up to date with your updates from “South of the Tweed”, where it will be considerably cooler than here in Brisbane.
    Cheers

  4. Hi Linda, I have come to really appreciate those who farm for a living… It’s unbelievable what you all go through… You have to have a good sense of humor since, when dealing with the weather, there’s not one thing you can do about it… I hope the storm and wind doesn’t get really bad during the night….

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  5. At least all the walking and working keeps you in shape. It’s keeping ahead of the weather that kills you. The ditch picture is a beauty. Rain, wind and spit snow here all day.

  6. Oh, I know what you mean about wind. The wind has just hit here and is supposed to reach to 40mph tomorrow. We just had a nice cold front………..no low enough to freeze. Hope it all turns out well for you. blessings,Kathleen

  7. Blowing here too but only 55 mph gusts. LOL. Reno, Nevada had 125 mph gusts when it blew through there so I guess we should feel lucky. Can’t believe you are planting corn! We are still just below frost at night but that will inch up the next few days. I actually unplugged the chicken water heater today. A SURE sign of spring!!!

  8. Oh my gosh, I just spent some time getting caught up on your posts. Good Lord, you guys have soooo much work! From the leveling to the irrigating to dealing with weather … I’m so impressed how you stick to it. In my prayers tonight, I’ll be offering words of thanks that there are farmers like you to contribute to keeping the world fed. Oh, one more thing, loved the photos of the little kids helping out!

  9. The wind here in the Texas Panhandle has been insane, too, this spring. Guess it beats the alternative. 100 degrees and sweltering, eh?
I just love reading your adventures…someday we’ll have our own farm.
