Momma Deer and the First Cutting of Hay

We had a very busy four days off, Terry got the beans harrowed off (you have to do this or the crust on the top will prevent the little beans from coming through), it’s been so hot and windy that everything has dried out all over again. Irrigating is a constant.

We celebrated Evan’s 39th birthday.  Gosh I’m getting old, Shannon is 41, Evan 39, Kimi 35 and Misty 32  where does time go?

Memorial Day we took flowers to graves, looked at where our family plots are and celebrated

With lots of food and family and cooking.

Tuesday, Terry cut the hay…first cutting of the year

The ditch rider came by and locked the gate on our headgate.  The spring run off is over so any extra water is done for the year.  If it stays as hot and windy as it has been we will be changing water every 10 hours instead of 12.  We do get a reprive every once in awhile when a cold front blows through, but that doesn’t last long.

Of course now that the hay has been cut we want the hot weather to stay and rain to come again some other day.  🙂

The following Archaeological Rock Art I call “Momma Deer”.  The white chip-like markes are from people vandalising the ‘sign’ by shooting it with guns.

I have several furlough days in June, but I get to work on my yard (and do some things I can’t get done when I’m getting a pay check ).  It all works out in the end.

  1. Hi Linda, Just stopping by to say hi and see how life is in Colorado…. Hope you all have a good weekend–and hope that the weather stays nice for you.

I am having Arthroscopic Knee Surgery tomorrow. Keep me in your thoughts.
    Hugs,

  2. Hi Linda
Looks like good weather at last.
One wonders at the brain cells that some “ferals” possess.
How could anyone get any satisfaction from shooting at primitive
drawings on a rock face???? They are just as idiotic as the graffiti brigade
who seem to delight in vandalising anything in sight!
Pity your “feral” vandals wouldn’t turn their guns on themselves!
    Cheers

  3. Glad you got in a little time to take a break from farming. I know what you mean about your kids catching up to you in age. ;D Your first cutting looks good. Hoping for just the right weather to make things grown but not burn them.

  4. I had a furlough day yesterday. I seem to be more productive on days that I’m not getting paid for then the vacation days I take where I am. Weird huh? I hope the weather stay dry at least until you have the hay put up.

Love the rock art. Hate the people who deface it.

  5. Work when you can at home, it sure seems to pile up fast when you are making a pay check;) Time sure does go fast, the little ones seem to grow so fast and it is hard to believe that you used to hold them in your arms!

  9. Would love to have some of that good looking hay. Now that I have a goat and looking for another one I have to buy hay. Its hard to find good hay around here. Everything looks so nice around your place.

  10. I love those cave drawings! Way cool.

We had our first cutting about three weeks ago of grass and alfalfa. It’s outrageously priced… Oat hay got cut right after that to get RAINED on. Lots of farmers lost their fields. Very sad. But that’s farming.

I’m dreading buying hay for my horses this year. Luckily I can buy a truck/trailer load and it lasts two years.

    Have a great day!

  11. YOU ARE NOT OLD!…..and neither am I 😉 Glad to hear your progressing with the farming despite the weather we’ve had. I love the mama deer, there are supposed to be some in the badlands but I’ve never found them.
