The Corn is Looking Good

The corn is tasseling out and setting ears now.

This is when we start having trouble with the deer.  They love to eat the silks off the corn.  As most of you know the pollinating of the corn ear comes from the tassel which is at the top of the corn stalk.  The pollen from the tassels falls all over the silk at the end of the corn husk (ear). Each little silk is a direct link to a kernel inside the husk.

If the deer eat the silk the husk dries up and dies.  No corn. Not for us or anyone.

It’s hot here…running anywhere between 97-1004*.  Humdity builds and builds and builds and then we get

a storm.  Sometimes with rain, and sometimes with hail, but the hail has missed us so far.

We were taking Fuzzy down to the river for a swim, but the water is now gone.  That’s one the things that happens to the Roubioux in August.

  1. If it was 1004 here I would lay in the ditch too (o:
Once again I ‘learnded’ something (as my 3 year old says)
tassels are very important things … who knew? (o:
We had a coolish morning here…I was going to take some littles swimming but decided it was to cold… ish

  2. Good God – skunks, racoons, wolverines, crows, feral dogs, badgers and now the deer have fun with
your corn fields. You would need 24 hour security!!!!!! Your “west” is still pretty wild!
Thank heavens here the main predators with regard to cattle ( calves especially) are the
dingoes and some feral dogs, the sheep have the crows and the eye removing in the lambing season, the
crops ( wheat etc.) have just to contend with the cockatoos and the galahs.

I am surprised that the Roubioux River dries up so suddenly – are there not any weirs or dams on it
    for water storage?

OK – now I guess you best go back out on the patrol against the deer fraternity. Never a dull moment in
    Colorado?????
    Cheers

  3. I want the deer to stay out. That way maybe we’ll get some sweet corn down here. Ours has been down here has been gone for months. It’s cooler here but much more humid.

How’s Terry feeling? I’ve seen a whole lot of gluten-free stuff in the store lately. Every time I do I think of you. This Monday I’ll have a pizza recipe that I think you could make glutten-free.

  4. Hi Linda, Gee–that corn certainly is healthy right now…. Hope you keep the deer away… What do you do to deter them?????? Here, we have to spray “Liquid Fence” on our flowers to keep the deer away. Otherwise we’d have NO flowers at all–especially the roses…

    Good LUCK…..
    Hugs,
    Betsy
P.S. We finally got some rain late this afternoon… YEAH RAH!!!!

  5. Deer munching on corn silk is a new one to me. How do you deal with Bad Bambi?

Fuzzy looks so different with his summer haircut. Too bad his swimming hole has dried up. He’ll have to talk you into filling the kiddy pool in the back yard.

We had a pile of clouds puff up and turn all black this afternoon. They rolled on north and made a mess up there, but they cooled off the air enough that my gardening was a lot more pleasant.

  6. I finally grabbed a bit of time to catch up on your blog, when life is crazy busy I miss checking in on life in your neck of the woods. As always I enjoy your pictures and the little bits of history and info you share along with them.

  7. Don’t you just love it when those storms burst on a particularly hot muggy day? Then you step outside once it’s over to find it’s even worse? Ugh!

Our summer in New England is giving me flashbacks to my Oklahoma childhood – hate to say it, but I’m ready for fall…

  8. Hot here too…finally some thunderstorms came through and cooled it down. I lost another chicken to the heat earlier in the week, down to 6… But I still have Ernie, one of the black ducks. He now follows me around like I am his momma or girlfriend, not sure which…Quack, Quack…..

  9. I’m jealous, we lost our corn this year to a storm. It blew it over! We only had three rows, but that’s all we needed for the two of us. Yours looks beautiful. 🙂
