Getting Closer to Harvest

We are getting closer to the pinto bean harvest

The leaves are turning yellow and the bean pods are starting to dry up.

Therefore, Terry has watered them for the last this year.

On my way back from Paonia today I saw leaves starting to change in the trees.  And a sure sign of cooler weather ahead ….Chicory!

  1. I too seen on our way home from WI yesterday the bushes changing colors prepping for fall. I am not ready for summer to be over at all.
With the guys gone most of the summer it seems we didnt get much of one. I dont think the boys are quite ready for school to start next week either. Oh well…its going to happen anyways!
And Daryl is definitely not ready for school to start as he needs help with third cutting next week!

  2. Hi Linda
Well having NEVER laid eyes on pinto beans – anywhere, I would have driven right
by your field and thought what a mess of weeds – true. How do you pick the beans? By machines
    or by hand?
I still haven’t seen them in any supermarket here in Brisbane – numerous varieties of beans that
I have never heard of before, but NO PINTO beans! Also after all that rain you have had, the soil in your parts
dries out very quickly, almost looks arid.
Great day for lunch beside the Brisbane River today, temp 27c., warm and sunny and better still
windless! A rarity for the month of August.
Looking forward to further updates on these beans that have me so intrigued.
    Cheers

  3. Yup, leaves are starting to turn here too, leaves are falling from the trees due to the lack of rain and moisture. It is unbelievably dry and dusty here. My vegetable garden basically dried on the vine, berries too. My gourds and Cinderella pumpkins are doing well, go figure. Linda, love the new header!

  4. Hi Linda…. Questions from the one who knows nothing about farming!!!! ha…. In that first and second picture, where are the bean pods? The brown part???? I can’t see them… OR –are they under the plant at the bottom?

When you pick them –do you have a machine to do it??? I would assume that you wouldn’t have to pick them by hand. Yipes!!!!

I am enjoying the Western Colorado sweet corn SO MUCH—and I’m fixing some pinto beans and cornbread this weekend. YUMMMMMMM..

  5. Looks like the beans have made it to harvest time in good shape. Hope you have a plentiful yield. Good that the irrigation work is over since you have to focus on bringing in the crop in the near future.

Now when I get out those pinto beans to go with my ham I will look to see if they came from Colorado.

  6. The first sign of Fall up here is when you suddenly realize that twilight doesn’t last until 9:30pm any more… “Hey, it’s only 8, and it’s already dark? What gives? Oh…yeah.”

Our current daytime temperatures are certainly no clue!

Love the new header, Linda. I’m a John Deere gal all the way! My Granddad sold them for a long time in Arkansas. There’s a little green tractor ornament that hangs on our Christmas tree every year in his honor…

  7. I’m assuming that pinto beans are combined, aren’t they? Like soy beans are. Do you have to hire it done or do you have your own combine? If for some reason, we can’t plant cotton, we have planted soy beans, but then have to have it custom combined as there are few combines around this area.

We water crops here until the first part of September, and it has been very dry lately, so everything is going full blast.

I, also, like your new header!

    Blessings!

  8. The brush is starting to change color in the woods, the Oaks will start to lose a few leaves here and there..the Acorns are green but will start falling soon bringing deer feeding into the yard. Fall is in the air..I saw some Geese heading south..the nights were cool but we hit a warm spell again. We have had lots of rain too, it is good for the trees:)
