Bird Song!

Its cold here.  Very cold!  -6* this morning as I was coming into work.

This time of year I always get restless.  I miss color, the world is so all one color in the winter.  I also miss the sunshine.

I drove in to work in a thick fog full of ice crystals.

I miss heat, not from the wood stove, but the out-of-doors kind of heat.

The sun is just coming up when I get to the door of my office, but when I get home the day is longer…no more getting home in the dark, so that is gift.

The dogs and I go for a walk, even if it’s cold (9* last night when we walked).  It does my ‘trapped at a computer’ mind and body good to get outside.

Look at this tree on our place…it was FULL of birds….birds, birds, and more birds!  They filled the air with loud bird song, bird squabbles, and many flapping of wings.

The whole experience was a major delight!

  2. Great photo! Wow, that is a lot of birds. I am a terrible wienie about going outdoors when it is cold if I don’t have to. Of course I do have to but I bribe people to take my place whenever I can. lol

  3. Hi Linda
    I concur – BRRRRRRRRRRR!
You must be an excellent driver to navigate that road from the farm to your office –
on a daily basis and mostly in the dark.
Hope Spring arrives early for you over in Colorado in 2011.
    Cheers

  4. You have lucky dogs! Mine would have to take themselves for a walk, because I’d be frozen like Han Solo in Star Wars at those temperatures.

How on earth do the birds stay warm/alive at those temps? Maybe there’s heat in numbers??

  5. It was beautiful here today……melting in fact. Good thing too because it rained last night and then froze……..slippery doesn’t even cover it. We’ve got sparrows, crows and the dreaded magpie and that’s about it.

  6. It looks like that arctic air went a looong way south. At least it’s warming up enough that the birds are excited. That’s got to be cheering. Know what you mean about taking a walk just to get a change of air and view.

  7. I hate being cold and it’s somehow worse in the dark! But I always start watching the clock around this time of year as the days get 1 minute longer each day. That’s 10 minutes more daylight every 10 days! I know that spring is coming. It’s now less than 60 days to the beginning of March and that starts spring for me. The trees start to bud ever so slightly then and while we can still get snow here in Ohio until April, I know that spring will be coming along.

  8. Good grief that is cold. My 27 degree experience in Seattle seems like I was whining. Okay, so I was whining. A little or a lot depending on who you ask. Stay warm. At least it is light when you get home.

  9. I love, love, love birds. What a joyous song, even if they are only cheeping. Fills me with hope and joy.

I’m focusing on the coming spring. Right now, it’s all white and foggy here, too.

  10. I’m with you I miss the sunshine but I’ll have to say we’ve had cloudy days with absolutely lovely sunsets. Aren’t those birds just amazing – we scared up a flock of sparrows the other night during our walk – they were just sitting on the snow in a ditch. Scared me (and the dog) – haha. Spring will be here soon enough and then Summer and we’ll be complaining about how hot it is! LOL

  11. Nature…and especially animals and birds always gives me a lift (o:
that is a lot of birds. Reminds me of the news about a large number of birds dying in another state. That was really weird.

  12. I’m trapped at work behind a computer as I type this. Life was grand when I worked swing shift, I took care of everything during the day then sat behind a computer in the evening. I don’t watch TV, so that worked wonderfully well for me for 15 years. Now I have to report for duty between 8 and 5 every stinking day. That’s so hard to do when you live on a farm and have animals to take care of. It’s much worse in the winter when I only see my place in the day time on weekends. It’s not so bad if I look out my tiny window at work and see fog or rain, but on sunny days I go stir crazy. I love my work and the people I work with, but I can’t keep this up, things deteriorate at home and I have to pay someone else to fix them. I don’t know anyone who farms in my area who doesn’t have at least one wage-earner in the family who goes to an outside job every day. Is that true in your area as well?

  14. You did a wonderful job of expressing how many of us feel at this time of the year. We took my parents home from my sister’s house today and passed several trees/fields just loaded with birds. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many birds at one time.
