While out checking on my trees I noticed this. Deer damage? Porcupine? Only the mulberry is harmed, it’s bark is a little more fragile and the trunk very straight.
Sigh!
On the other hand another Jasmine from my tiny collection is blooming. I don’t know what one this one is, but it blooms yellow instead of white. AND it smells just like a warm summer’s eve!
Wonderful!
Linda

Looks like a buck rub to me although I certainly may be mistaken.
Lovely jasmine!

I agree with the others. Looks very much like my young trees when I forget to cover them in the fall. I love the bucks, but I wish they’d find other trees besides my saplings.

I’m going to say that it is some kind of critter. Aren’t I helpful? HA! Our jasmine is sitting on the patio but by February should be blooming. The smell is incredible!

Hi Linda, OH–how I love Jasmine… Bet that room smells really good.
Don’t know what is happening to your trees??? The deer will eat most anything I hear….
Have a great weekend.

We also have issues with the rabbits. The deer if chewing will eat higher rather than lower. Those don’t look like chew marks…I think threecollie may be right – buck rub. If it continues, then probably not and the only way I’v found to fix it is wrap it for the little critters, or deer fence for the big ones. Still jealous over your jasmine! 🙂

I would think it’s deer but honestly didn’t know that porcupine do damage also. Love your star jasmine.

I’m sorry I can’t help you identify the cause of the damage to your tree, but I can say that being able to smell jasmine this time of the year must be heavenly.

Beaver? It’s hard to tell in the winter, when everything’s hungry. Now you have a mystery. Any other clues? Tracks, spoor, tail marks on the ground? I would be happy to have something munch on the many mulberries that sprout around here. Unfortunately the animals go after camellias and other expensive plants first.
