Not One but Two Traffic Jams

The ranchers in the area are all on the move.  Farming is started so the winter pasture for the cattle is now over.

Yesterday one group of cows coming from ‘down the hill’ met up with

Another group ‘coming down the road’ at the middle of the road.  The dogs were all action.

The one turning the corner went first, then the other going on by second.

Out on the desert

The sheepherders were moving the sheep from one side of the road

To the next.

Through it all….

The dogs were the stars of the day.

  1. How beautiful! I just love living next to the mountains. I wonder with all the sheep if they dock the tails on all of them? I envy you for living next to all the herds of cattle. I love living away from all the fast paced living! Living on a farm is hard work but it is so rewarding in it’s own ways. Hope you have a great weekend!

  2. Hi Linda, Looks like a ‘cow-jam’ or a ‘sheep-jam’ instead of a traffic jam… ha ha…. SO–looks like winter is almost over and spring is coming… Yeah!!!

I’ll bet the dogs were the stars of the show!!!!

  3. Spectacular scenery in your part of the world! I’m always amazed at how the movers of cattle and sheep can keep them sorted out and headed in the right direction. Dogs are an essential part of that job, for sure, and the dogs seem so excited to do their job.

  4. Now there’s a traffic jam that’ll bring a smile. Love the look of your area! There’s a pretty good story and pics about cow dogs in the last issue of American Cowboy. It is difficult to put a price on a good stock dog. Thanks for this post. Well done.

  5. It all looks so vast! Expansive! Huge mountains looming on one side, wide open plains on the other…you live in a magnificent, awe-inspiring setting, Linda!!! And I’d swap your traffic jams for ours, any day! 🙂

  6. OOOPS! Meant to comment on the stars of the day…dogs are absolutely invaluable to man, for comfort, security and now, as you’ve demonstrated here, running the farm! What would our lives be without them?

  7. I hope you weren’t in a hurry to get some place. If I didn’t have to be somewhere by a certain time I think I would enjoy these traffic jams. It is always fascinating to watch the dogs at work. What would the ranchers do without them?

  8. As always, the pictures you have shared are stunning!
My daughter and I are going to be in that area for 10 days this summer on a road trip. I will certainly blog it when it happens, we start in Billings MT, go down through WY, ID, CO, NE, and ending in SD on a national park tour. We are staying 2 nights in Estes Park.
I am sure we have never seen anything like it except for in your pictures!

P.s. Thank goodness we made it through another winter!
