We visited the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is amazing. Heck that doesn’t even BEGIN to describe it.
This privately funded memorial is for all Indians everywhere….from sea to shining sea and from the North Pole to the South. Hours can be spent in the exhibt houses alone.
Since no one really knows what Crazy Horse looks like ….he refused to have his soul captured by ink or camera this is the representation of what the stone artist and the elders decided he MAY have looked like.
If you love Indian culture and want to read a really good book about the Bad Lands, the Black Hills and the Plains Indians read Hanta Yo. I am on my 17th reading….it is an amazing book!
We went late enough in the day we would be there for the laser light show.
Stunning is the word!
I was sitting by some young girls of the Navajo nation. When the song “I’m Proud to be an American” was sung during the light show those beautiful young girls sung to themselves along with the song. As the song ended the little girl (about 14 I would guess) said to herself, but so I could hear….’I AM proud…very proud!’
Brought tears to my eyes!
I too am Proud to be An American!
Linda
Sounds like you are having a great time. A friend of mine had given me that book Hanta Yo, awhile back, but I haven’t read it yet, now I feel I must!

Last year I wanted to make a loop trip through the Dakotas and the Great Lakes states that border them, but it seemed like everything was under water all season and I had to scratch that idea. Now you’ve gotten me jazzed about it again. I want to fly and rent a car and do some exploring. You won’t catch me inside a cave, though, so I’ll save your pictures and look at them again. Thanks!

This is truly one place I have always wanted to see, as well as Wounded Knee and the Medicine Wheel. It choked me up that the girl was proud to be an American. After the past we have shared with the Indian nations, those are such great words to hear. Great trip! So glad you got to go!
