The Heat is On!

It’s horribly hot here (I’ve been saying that for some time)…..

Here is the temps at 11:00 this morning

It gets worse during the day.  By 3:00 in the afternoon you and everything else has turned into crispy chips.

Of course the wind blows…that stuff can blow all night, or start around 8 in the morning or wait until after it has lunch to get really fortified…  I can’t take photos of the wind so you will just have to take my word for it….the wind is here, and it is hot, and it can get to really blowing.

Still I’ve gotten lots of places in the yard cleaned up and painted. Terry and I have hauled most of the old iron to scrap man,

(we have a couple of old cars to go next), and we have started collecting wood for winter.

That seems so insane with all of this heat right now, but it is necessary.

We are still changing water, constantly, Terry checks every two hours, if the row is through he moves it, by the end of 8 hours if the all the rows are through…they get changed anyway.  If the water stays at 50% we will make it, it gets any lower, we don’t know what will happen.

Lots of people are struggling…some farmers have had to  disc up crops because the water is so short…others are trying to save what they can for as long as they can…it’s a mess.

The first crop to go is alfalfa….prices are already high…this winter they will be worse. The next crop is onions….they take TONS of water…and their season is long…5 acres fields have been cut in half, as for 10 acre fields….lots of corn hasn’t been planted…the ground is just too dry, the air too hot, and the water too short so those guys are going for pinto beans…lots of pintos should flood the market and drop the price for them.

As of last night 10 fires are in Colorado….not around us, but around Durango, and the mountains around Denver/Fort Collins/ and Colorado Springs.  Utah is also having fires.   Montana is burning also…go to my delightful blog friends’ blog to see…. then there is Nevada —burning….fires everywhere.

We have lots of haze, I can’t imagine what it is like where the fires are.

These look like rain clouds…they never stay…they ride the wind blowing over fast, with others taking their place.

Makes for dramatic sunsets, that is for sure.

Linda

  1. Hot here too –and VERY dry. We are desperate for rain! Strange how some areas are getting too much rain and some are getting none…. Today –it is cooler here –but they say it will only last for ONE day!!! The heat comes back tomorrow…

Hope those fires in CO don’t get near to you… You have had enough fire for a lifetime I hope…. Your home/yard is looking nice. I know you are pleased to get rid of a lot of the junk…

    Great sunset picture for sure!!!!!

Try to stay COOL–as much as possible.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  2. Gosh Linda, I think of us both living in the West, but California sure has not been sharing your weather. It’s been lovely and cool in the 80s here all week, the kind of day when you just want to lie on the lawn and watch the patchy clouds float by. I’m sure it won’t last long, but it’s been nice. Your place looks wonderful!

I was just thinking about firewood last night. It is, after all, past the summer solstice. Before I can get any more wood I have to restack what’s in my wood shed. A whole row fell over.

Hoping for better weather and more water for you.

  3. Be careful in that heat! Don’t overdo it.
Prayers for all those in the fires. Texas certainly knows how the hot/dry can fuel terrifying fires.
Stay cool. Prayer for rain and cooler temps, too.

  5. Being dry is always a very trying time. You hope everyday but it seems to go on and on. Hard work, good management and good luck helps to make success.

  7. Your yard is lovely. It’s good to have a picture of your home. I’m so sorry to hear about the water shortage, heat and lack of rain. It will be 108 in Lawton today and no rain in sight. The wheat is already cut, very early this year. Friends in the Colorado Springs area say everything smells like smoke.

Take care, I’m hoping for rain for all of us!!

  8. It’s above 100 at 4PM here. The closest fire is in Colorado Springs. Of course windy.
Your home looks very inviting Linda. I ready for some plain old regular type sunsets.

  9. Hi
Being house-bound with the “flu” and bloody conjunctivitis! I fiddled with my computer yesterday as I was having various problems with it. God only knows what I have done?? It is now all different.

I wish I could send our blasted rain across to you people in the States. It is not improving my health or temper!! The paper tissue companies here are booming with sales!
You sure have been hard at work. The end result looks great.

    Cheers

  12. Hard to see that some of the most pretty sunsets are the ones created by smoke. You and Terry are crazy busy in this heat I’m impressed. I hear you about the water and we need to pray or dance or something for RAIN. Florida you can send some this way please.
