Our irrigation water comes from the Iron Stone Canal. If you remember, the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users turned off all the irrigation water on the 14th of October.
One week and several days later this is what the canal looks like
It takes several days for the water to finally shrink until there is nothing left…always amazing how long and how far the water travels until it reaches the Gunnison and the Colorado Rivers.

Oh, my Uncle was in charge of all the water/irrigation/etc. for the valley for 4 decades and lived in Kanna Creek at the charge station- an interesting tie in to this post.

We owe a lot to those pioneers of farming who engineered the canals that made the desert blossom. And the first canals were really done the hard way. We stand on big shoulders.

So with this much water , it must be a vary large system to take this long to wind down and dry up.

Water spreads over this planet like a spider web. The water distribution system is so fragile. It’s quite an education to watch the water dry up when the source is turned off.

Is there wild life like fish in the canal, or does it stay clear of little bodies ?

Our water (lake/reservoir) is shrinking too (but it isn’t the same importance as it is for you).
