Third day of rain…not complaining. We come in wearing mud for shoes.

Storm-1

It’s also cold.  We had to start a fire again.

Now if it is just snowing in the mountains……………….

Stagecoach Travel Rules

  • If the stage teams run away or are pursued by Indian, stay in the coach and take your chances. Don’t jump out, for  you will be either injured or scalped.
  • In cold weather abstain from liquor for you are subject to freezing quicker if under the influence than as though you were cold sober.  But if you are drinking from a bottle, pass it around.  It is the only polite thing to do.  Be sure to procure all stimulants before leaving the station, for the ranch whisky is not nectar.
  • Don’t smoke a strong cigar or pipe on the stage, especially when women and children are present. If chewing tobacco, spit to the leeward side.
  • Don’t swear, snore or lop over on neighbors when sleeping.  Let others share the buffalo robes provided in cold weather.
  • Don’t shoot firearms for pleasure while en-route, as it scares the horses.
  • While at stations, don’t lag at wash basins or privies. Don’t grease your hair with bear grease or buffalo tallow, as travel is very dusty.
  • Don’t discuss politics or religion. Don’t point out sites where robberies or Indian attacks have taken place.
  • Don’t imagine you are going on a picnic, for stage travel is inconvenient.

  1. I loved the Rules! We have been pretty nice here for the last few weeks, but as of today the rains are supposed to start and stay for at least the next few days and get a little chillier than it has been. Hope you get plenty of rain but not too much. Sometimes it starts rainging then forgets to stop!

  2. I love how they make points on general manners into rules. You wouldn’t find that today! Glad you are getting some extra moisture, even if it’s supposed to be warm by now. A couple days ago we had a torrential downpour, which is highly unusual for this time of year. We literally went from wildfires to rain overnight. I love it, though: if I can get rain on my birthday I consider it lucky.

  3. Those rules are great! I guess I should find a suitable alternative to buffalo tallow. 😉 We are reading a book right now called The Pony Express by Ralph Moody. You might like it. It is a good and exciting history of the individual riders and their experience on the trail.

  5. FIVE Stars for sharing the Stagecoach Rules – Thank you Linda!! You started my day off with a smile.
We’ve been having rain here in northern Nevada since Saturday night but no snow (that I can see) – maybe up higher (I’m a hoping).

  6. I love the rules. And the canyon.
I’ve been lurking, reading. Your discussion of your farming was so interesting. Most of what grows here is dry land. Hay is irrigated (if there is water), but a couple of years ago several people tried dry land corn. I guess it worked ok the first year, but it was a major wreck last year.
The photos of the Boys helping are wonderful!

Can’t believe it’s cold again…saw a comment on another blog that said it seems like Mother Nature has dementia…

  8. Love the rules. Like Jan commented, I immediately thought of airplane travel.
So glad you are getting rain… we will have to remember how chilly it has been when we are hot and sweaty this summer!

  9. This sounds much better than last year as I din’t think you had any rain and had to depend on irrigation. We’ve had a few days of warm weather but then lots of cold.
