Let me tell you about our night visitor—-A SKUNK!

Spring, summer, and fall are all TIME OF THE SKUNK!  They do not hibernate in the winter but they do become less active.

We have another skunk!

Mom said unless it tries to get into the chicken house just LET IT PASS ON BY!

No chasing it!

EVER!

Did you know skunks only live in the New World and they are part of the weasel family!

They also have a NASTY spray this STINKS!  And if you get sprayed it is comes out has an oily, yellowish/greenish liquid!

Just ask HANK! The grand kid’s dog and our goodest friend!

OH! YES!  They can spray up to fifteen feet. (and the spay smell can travel a good mile.)

Hank took one on and tried to kill it…phew we can smell Hank clear up here!

Oh, yes!!! Mom says that we all need to be careful because skunks are the number one carrier of the Rabies Virus!

So all you dogs out there BE CAREFUL!!!

Because Hank REALLY, REALLY, I meant REALLY STINKS!!!

  1. Isn’t Boomer a gorgeous dog? We have stoats and weasels but luckily not skunks here.
    Love those shoes that just manage to pop into the corner of your photograph.

  2. Yup! For sure, leave them alone! We both have been sprayed. Mom tries to get them away from the house. She sort of sneaks up on them,picks them up by the tail, and delivers them to a new location. But dogs should not try this!!
    Mom says she has heard something about dish soap and hydrogen peroxide and something elsethat is supposed to work really well. But I know she keeps a bottle of Mother Nature’s Skunk Oder Remover.
    Do you have porcupines there? Mom says we do but I haven’t seen one yet. Mom says you shouldn’t try to kiss them. They’re sharp.

  4. Yessirree Bob, skunks are bad news! Best mind Mom. Happy Belated Birthday, Fuzzy! I hope you are enjoying your birth month. Glad Terry’s leg wasn’t any worse and that you got the hay baling and hauling figured out. Your yard is gorgeous, very peaceful.

  5. Poor Hank! That must be awful for him and oh course all of you.

    I don’t normally chase other critters. My mom says it is because I’m so focused on my walk that I just don’t see or smell them. I do but I’m just not that interested in them. Right now, I’m more interested in the little next-door neighbor girl. She is the best! She comes over to my house and we play and play. She lets me lick her face and run in circles around her. I make her laugh really hard. Mom gives her a Popsicle so I can have a rest cus we play so hard.

  7. Well I got my new screensaver…BOOMER!!!! and his nose…ha ha Hey do you know about tomato juice …a bath in it for Hank would work totally. Try it.. I have bathed my dogs in it and it works….

    Those dogs are sooo sweet. They know not to chase that skunk…love your story here and love the pictures.!!! There’ssomething deters the skunks too. if you put it around….not sure what it is…but like our Native American Teacher used to say to us:” I talk to those cirtters and tell them they have their space, and I have mine. They need to stay on theirs, and I will not bother them. We have this kind of understanding!!” And he never had any mosquitoes in his area at all….they understood him!!! try it. with the skunks…..!!!   9. We have never seen one around here but we know they are here because we have smelled them many times out in the country. We have a great respect for them to say the least.

  13. Great photos! I just love the adventures of Boomer and Fuzzy! Love the last photo! 🙂 We have skunks here. The dogs know them as “stinky kitties”. And they leave them alone. It seems they know what to mess with and what not. Like porcupines!

  22. Oh no poor Hank.
    Here is our skunk recipe..it really works
    1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

    1/4 cup of baking soda

    1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap

    for very large pets one quart of tepid tap water may be added to enable complete coverage.

    Wash pet promptly and thoroughly, work the solution deep into the fur. Let your nose guide you, leave the solution on about 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. Some heavily oiled areas may require a “rinse and repeat” washing.

    Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the eyes – it stings. If you have any cuts on your hands you might want to wear latex gloves for the same reason.

    After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water.

    Pour the spent solution down the drain with running water.

    NEVER, ever, store mixed solution in a closed bottle, sprayer,etc. Pressure will build up until the container bursts. This can cause severe injury.

  23. Wow did not know they were in #1 position and Ron saw a huge one spying my garden and plastic compost container. The night after I tried a side dressing of fresh kitchen scraps in the garden away from tender roots 🙂

    JT I hope never messes with it or it her as JT hates BATHS 🙂

    We have a 22 at the door for rabid animals and I always scope out the acreage before letting her out now on the other had the CAT she ay be in danger as she thinks most visitors are friends ie TURKEY lol both have shots but most do not know if you have a pet who gets bit they must go to the vet for booster and you need to be checked if you handled the wound nasty stuff that rabies is 😦
