Today is cloudy and cool. It is 67* right now…with rain showers here and there around us … nice!
Terry came in this morning and said he found stripped pinto bean pods…a sure sign we will be looking at harvest in a couple of weeks, by the third week of August for sure.
Today is Lammas Day—after Lammas Day the corn ripens as much by night as by day. Although, I think most of the wheat harvest is done here and in the other states next to or below ours. I am also sure that the wheat harvest is moving on up into the northern most states. Maybe it is over for those states also, hummmm.
The last load of hay is leaving today…every bales sold (now) until third cutting.
Boy, is summer flying now. We still need to get 3 more cords of wood, maybe 5 cords. We used 7 cords last winter and still ran out. It sure was a long winter. Geez, I dread winter.
I got all the corn up that I’m going to put up. That is always a good feeling.
Off to do my work for the day…it’s so nice outside I don’t think weeding is going to be much of a chore. All my seeds I planted are blooming now, sure makes me smile.
Have a good one everyone!
Linda

I’m sure with you on dreading winter!

Hi Linda, beautiful rainbow… Glad you are getting some cooler temps… We have had a very very mild (compared to most summers) summer so far… Haven’t had to turn on the AC one single time. Amazing –since it’s August… Hopefully, we’ll have an EARLY Fall.
We bought some of that delicious Colorado corn yesterday at Kroger’s… It’s the best we get anywhere in the summer–even the homegrown kind from around here…
Never heard of Lammas Day. Interesting.
Hugs,
Betsy

The corn is beautiful!! Fall is just around the corner. We may get our hay up by then. We had 8″ of rain in July and it’s raining today.

My brother who runs the family farm is hoping the rain stays away in NE Louisiana. The corn needs to dry out so they can harvest. Love the rainbow! We are still needing rain here in SE Texas, about 10 inches behind in our rainfall totals. Watered my front yard last night after 8 p.m. Too hot to do it before. Ready for fall!

Sounds like you guys are rippin right through your harvests! 🙂 I can not believe its August 1st! Where is summer going! They are about half way done with wheat harvest here. Then it will start, if not already up to the north. Cool here today also. In the upper 80’s with thunder and lightning coming in. Neat – o! 🙂

The only bad thing about August is that is is closer to September and the days keep getting shorter.

Linda, type in this site and you will follow 4 families that do custom wheat harvest and one is heading to Montana. very interesting and they tell how their days go. ” all aboard wheat harvest. ” they give daily work like you do. Now I know you are running on a full schedule. No need to answer me.
We have had some wonderful rain and the rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes are full again. the crops look great and the mowing people have really been busy with yards, their business should be very good this year. Thank you for keeping us all informed how things are in your area. Sharon Drake Aug. 1,2013

I’m glad the last of this hay cutting is gone. We were able to get some of your good Colorado corn at the supermarket yesterday — it’s as good as I remembered. I hope your rainbow followed a nice rain shower.

Don’t say “winter” yet. 🙂
It’s a hot, sticky day here on the front range, which is very un-Colorado like. Cool rainbow, and I can see that faint second rainbow to the right in your photo. Always nice.

It’s interesting that you get a third crop of hay. My brother’s are finished with hay and will be starting silage next week. The use barley for silage . Wheat here will be at least five more weeks. some early barley is starting to turn. Interesting how much earlier you are than us.

All the hay sold, all the corn put-up…sounds like late-summer 😀
We’ve got cool rain this morning…the afternoons have been warm, but the last few evenings have had that wonderful, cool, change-is-coming feel to them. August is the best month of summer up here!

Winter is not my favorite, and I’m sure we have even less of it than you do. What is the significance of stripped pods on the pinto beans? (city girl here)

I was through Kansas and Iowa last week. The wheat is definitely cut in Kansas. Good thing, too, as they’ve got flashflooding in Wichita now. So glad your hay was cut and already sold!
