We took a flying trip to Norfolk, Nebraska as Terry needed some combine parts and a bracket for the suitcase weights for one of the tractors. Since we were both ready for a short trip off we went.
The desert between us and Grand Junction is extremely green. ( You can see Wild Horse Mesa in the background — it is the last green bowl shaped mesa just before the blue sharp lines of Grand Mesa)
We have had and are still having lots and lots of rain. Very nice for making the world fresh and lovely.
We got to Grand Junction as morning was coming into full-light. This is a very quick photo of the Book-cliffs which surround Grand Junction on one side.
Glenwood Canyon was beautiful waking up to a day of full-speed-ahead traffic.
Driving through the Johnson side of the Eisenhower tunnel.
We live 5 hours from Denver. At this point we are about two hours away. This a horrible mess come ski-season. The traffic slows to a 30 m.p.h. or LESS crawl on Sunday afternoon as people try to come back from a weekend of skiing.
Taking the back roads and staying off the Inter State
This CAN BE a bleak trip, but we enjoy the farms and ranches.
It was sugar beet harvest
All the way from Colorado to Norfolk.
We cheered and clapped and gave everyone two thumbs up for being able to get their crops in.
That night we stayed in Ogalla, Nebraska —
Getting up early the next morning we we found lots of salvage yards
along our route.
Just what we were looking for!
Continued tomorrow….
Your friend on a California Mesa Farm,
Linda

I’m glad you were able to get away for a short trip, even if it was to get parts for the combine and tractor. I remember going through the Eisenhower tunnel when we were in your neck of the woods in 2011.

The men in my life LOVE the junk yards! lol! The things they find, and use. Looks like a great day for a drive and a little get away. 🙂

Wow – you have been getting a lot of rain! Its been many years since I’ve seen the desert that green.
Too bad the sugar beet industry in Colorado died. I’m surprised you saw an active factory.

Glad you two got ‘away’ for a day or two… Looks like you had a great trip. Glad the weather cooperated…
I read that you had had WAY too much rain lately (rare, since you have been so dry)… Did it ruin all of your Pinto Beans??? Hope not.
Have a great Sunday.
Hugs,
Betsy

I have a new found appreciation for open prairies and mesas this year. High desert really is striking.
What on earth is a suitcase weight? 🙂

Wow. I totally enjoyed the drive and I didn’t have to endure those trips to rest stop bathrooms. THANKS. Wishing you good hunting at the salvage yard and a safe trip home.

We have trouble finding suitcase weights that fit our subcompact tractor, so hubby made one out of cement.
Have a safe trip home!

I love a roadtrip and I’m glad you could both get away for this one.. We’ve driven some of those roads and one fall saw similar sugar beets….I was mesmerized by the huge piles of them (Bill was like ‘what did you expect anyway?’)…… Loved your pictures here and am looking forward to the rest of the story.

Your salvage yards look very different from ours. 🙂 Hope Bill found what he needed. You have to deal with skiers like we have beach-goers. They sure can snarl traffic.
