Thank you one and all for the magic thoughts, prayers and good wishes for each and every little problem we are experiencing.

Yesterday after the truck was loaded the chain on the gasoline combine’s hopper broke………AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!  Which means that today Terry and I will shovel out the hopper into the truck, then he will have to climb under and in to remove the chain….go up to Montrose to get a chain (more than likely it will be me and my little sick granddaughter to get the chain) while he tries to fix the diesel combine. When I get back he hopes to be combining with the first combine as the diesel combine is much cheaper to run.  If not…he has to figure out which combine will be the quickest to fix, not necessarily the cheapest.

What a harvest this has been!

The bean harvest was just as bad with the bean combine breaking down.  The funny thing about our equipment, is it is so old now that the parts a couple of years ago were cheap…not now…and it isn’t because they are hard to find, it’s because collectors have started collecting the equipment that we USE causing the price of the parts to triple in value.

Go figure.

So here we are…old ‘classic’ equipment, old ‘us’, and everything breaking down.  Terry says he either needs to buy some newer equipment or stop farming —the last isn’t going to happen my friends, I can’t even imagine it.  He says at 69 you could never farm out the cost of the newer equipment so he guesses he will just have to fix what he has.

Sigh.

Soooo anyway….here we are…Terry is at the elevator with the second load waiting to dump (he has been there since daylight) and I have a sick grandchild sleeping on the sofa.  In light of all that I thought something fun would be perfect for the post today.

CAN YOU FIND THE DEER

When we were up at the Diversion Dam I took a couple of photos of a deer in the trees, thinking we could play a game…sort like these two posts awhile back——-

Deer-3If you can see the deer tell us and also let us know what the deer is doing!

Hidden-deer

Have fun!

I’ll post the answers in a couple of days!

Your friend,

Linda

  1. I can see the deer. Seems to be standing about knee deep in leaves, maybe nibbling at them? I feel your pain at breakdowns, old machinery and absurdly expensive parts. Same boat here, just a different dock so to speak. hang in there….

  2. First of all, I so feel for you and Terry. And I just totally “get” the difficulty of it all. We’re in a similar situation even if what we do for a living is totally and utterly different. I send my best wishes to the little sick one on the couch, and I hope you are feeling better than a couple days ago! My hat is off to you, too, for being determined to have fun anyway!! So, yep! I can see that dear — what lovely long ears she has — or is that a he? let me look again — yep, I think it’s a she…and is she maybe eating the tree branches?? Hmmm. This is the bit I can’t really sort out. How sweet, though.

  3. Farming is so much more enjoyable, when you are past retirement age, when you lease your land to someone else and can finally just sit back and watch it. Or even get a paycheck for irrigating or plowing if the renter needs help.

  4. In the first picture the deer is looking at you. I can’t tell what it’s doing in the second photo — it seems to have it’s back to you. Sorry to hear about all the problems with combines. I’m even sorrier to hear what ‘collectors’ are doing to the price of parts for your equipment.

  5. I see the deer. She’s looking at you in the first one –and maybe she’s gathering sticks/twigs to make a warm home somewhere for winter….?????

So sorry about all of your equipment problems. It is sorta like when our bodies begin to break down as we age.. We can’t get a new one —and just keep on ‘fixing’ what we have to make it last as long as possible.

Sorry to hear that collectors are driving up the cost of parts… I would never have thought about that…. Too Bad.

Hugs to all of you—including the sickie in the house.

  7. Next thing you’ll have to go to an expensive antique auction to buy parts for your farm equipment. How strange and something I never would halve thought about. Magic prayers that the season goes smoothly and the little one soon feels better..

  8. Oh Lordy…been there done that! Heavy sigh….I am the parts runner too. Sorry your little granddaughter is still not well. Poor little tyke. Parts are sooooo costly! Have them come out to the farm and oh the bill! We just had to buy a new tractor and automatic grain truck. I am so tired of shifting!!!!! Deisel hasn’t come down, just gas! I remember when it was deisel that was cheap! Not anymore! Uffda….and who can afford a new combine? Yikes! Ours is fairly new and we have auto steer. That makes life easier! It has a nice long reel and that helps. Kevin is out doing field work and the temp is starting to drop. Brrrrr…..
We hope to retire at 65, but who knows…will probably just keep going. That’s what farmers do! Farm! LOL Hiding and peeking at you and then getting bored and grabbing a bite to eat! 😉

  9. Bummer to have all those problems — how ironic that equipment you use is more valuable and harder to get replacements because of collectors .. .that just doesn’t seem fair. I think the deer is at the bottom right in the top picture just resting. And I guess standing up in the second picture? Hope things get better soon and your sweet gd feels better soon.

  10. Oh Dear. Me had issues with the semi before we started hauling hay. Thank goodness it was just batteries. But the list goes on and on. And the expense! Sheesh. You’d think they were made of gold! We got a new to us tractor. We also have an old ford 7000 tractor. It’s getting tired. But works good for misc. things. New stuff is just so so expensive. Good luck with the repairs. Believe me, I feel your frustration!
I see the deer, standing in the trees. 🙂

  11. Hope you get the machinery fixed soon. Tough call, you have to have machinery to harvest the crop. Well when he is done farming maybe he can sell all his equipment for parts!!

I hope your Grand is all better soon. Ear infections are horrid.
Is that deer polishing up it’s antlers? 🙂

  13. Really sorry to hear about your equipment breaking. 😦
    Hope your granddaughter heals quickly!
I thought possibly the deer might be rubbing it’s antlers, but if it’s a female, maybe it’s just scratching itself?
    *hugs* Have a wonderful weekend!
