The Trees in Winter January 6, 2014

EveningI’m always surprised to see that the trees in winter have leaf buds waiting patiently on each and every branch and stem.  I read somewhere that the bud is full of starch waiting for water from the roots system to reach them.  Cocooned in a lovely sack of food.  Once spring comes, the snows melt, and the rains descend, water is available for the roots.

Then, when the wind blows, all the systems come together…the wind shakes the trees, the roots drink up, the inner workings carry inch by inch the leaf producing water to the starch. The bud starts to feed and drink and grow until we get to see LEAVES!  Beautiful, new, spring green leaves! That ripen into lush dark green summer leaves.

Until then we wait…along with the trees and the leaf buds…. for spring.

TreesWhile we wait the winter skies fill our days with brilliant showy colors!

It’s still cold here…woke up to 2 above Zero (F).  -16 C.  But the weather person says a warm up is on it’s way.  Thursday we would wake up to 12 f (-11 c).

Although, we are cold it is nothing like some of you are experiencing.  Sending Magic Thoughts your way for warmer temperatures soon!

You Farm Friend,

Linda

  1. Your winter skies are beautiful, and you’ve captured them beautifully. We’re almost as cold as you are today. The leaf buds aren’t the only ones waiting for the warm breezes of Spring.

  3. I’ve noticed the buds on my trees, too. Especially the Bradford Pears, this last week. Thanks for the info on them…I’ve always wondered why they budded so early.

Beautiful sky pictures! We don’t ever tire of them, do we?! we have clear, ice blue skies here this a.m. Is now 15*, we’re to get up to 30 today!

    Blessings!

  4. What a lovely way to describe the birth of trees in spring!! The little Mountain Boomer in our yard has been taking care of those beautiful little buds on the maple trees. It won’t affect the sugar running in the spring but will affect the seeds in the summer.

  5. I love the winter skies, the colors, it’s for sure a different kind of beauty. We usually don’t see leafing out until the end of Maybeginning of June, and by then, I am starving for GREEN 😉

  6. I’ve read that quite a few birds live on those buds throughout the winter, and it seems like the oak trees bud first and leaf out last. I’m feeling guilty here in California today, another warm, sunny day. I think there was a cloud this morning, but I don’t see it now. The 7-Day forecast says chance of showers on Saturday. You know you’re retired (or a farmer) when the weather is a major topic in your life. I worked for many years in an interior office and it made little difference to me what was happening outside (except for the prospect of flooding). I hope everyone out there in the nasty weather areas can stay safe and warm this week, and your animals, too.

  7. Ya know I have noticed buds on my lilac trees. I just thought it has been so warm and spring like here that they were confused! 🙂 I know I am. I get the “itch” to go work in the yard! Very cool info!
