We Took the Plunge — January 8, 2014

Before I tell you about the ‘plunge’ Terry and took I want to tell you that Fuzzy and Boomer were featured on PeaceLovinWhisker’s blog on the 30th of January.

She does a really nice blog featuring furry friends from all around blog land.  If you get a chance to hop over there I think you will find your time well spent.

House-PhoneYesterday Terry and I decided it was time to ditch the house phone and just move the house phone over to his cell phone.  He doesn’t like to use the cell phone so it sits in his truck, or in his coat pocket, or out on the tractor seat usually dead.

Lots of people (our ages) have moved their house phone number to a cell phone and just take it with them everywhere.

Now you and I know that we don’t ever really GO anywhere, but we do go around our place, sometimes to Grand Junction or Montrose, but really we don’t travel.

The move was to save money.  These fixed incomes seem to have a way of making you always looking at ways to save money.  So we took the plunge.  No more house phone bill, the same cell phone bill, and I have to get used to having a phone close by at all times.

I rather stopped that when I retired…my phone at the office sat right next to me and rang it’s little bell off all day long.  When I went home at night the ringing phone was NOT something I wanted to deal with.

But that was three years ago, so I think I can deal with the random call we get now.  Just a call here and there…nothing like work.

So we did it! We are now a cell phone only family!  My 6th grader grandson’s comment was: “Cool!  Just like us!”

Terry and I looked at each other and smiled…we have ARRIVED!

Off to help Terry with the furnace.  We work a little bit every day.  He is at the point now whereby he can get the Baso valve off so he can see what the problem is with it.  Everyday we are little bit closer.

After he is feels confident about the  furnace he wants to take a trip to Minnesota to look at a tractor there.  A 4040 John Deere–I think it would be nice if he could find one much closer.  He found this one through a tractor site and at this time it’s still for sale. (I’ll bet we don’t go, but everyone needs to dream).

He is also wanting to go over to Brush, Colorado to the tractor sale there to see if they have a John Deere 4040.  That one would be ever so much better and easier to get too.  Still he knows there is one in Minnesota as he talked to that guy.

Well, off to actually get the house cleaned today!

Your friend,

Linda

  1. Our Bulgarian friend Georgie made his own tractor, it is enormous and trundles along the road. He calls it his John Deere but really it is made up of loads of different pieces. There is not another one like it in existence. He even asked me to get him a John Deere manual andif I remember correctly that was for a 4040..he s a lovely man and an extremely clever engineer but never in a million years will his dream of owning a John Deere ever come true

  2. my 81 yr old neighbor has cell service only – never paid to have a land line put in. but the cell service is awful, here. very spotty coverage in our little ‘valley’ of service. i worry about her as she often can’t get calls in or out.

  3. We got rid of our landline phone a couple of years ago; however, we did buy a cheap little phone (about $20 a month -Verizon) to use that old telephone number on —to give to businesses/banks/doctors/etc…. That’s also where all of the junk/telemarketers calls come in too… We have a voice mail on that phone –and never answer it. People that need us will leave a message. Junk calls will not… (We are on the Do Not Call list–but we still get junk calls.)

We use our cellphone for all personal calls —and don’t give that number out to any businesses… This plan works well for us —and that $20 a month is worth the money for us.

Congrats… Hope you enjoy the change.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  5. Every time I try to cancel my landline, the company makes me an offer that is too good to turn down. I keep losing track of my cell phone so it is probably best to keep the landline until I stop being so absent minded.

  6. What I love about a cell phone is that I can shut it off and have peace and quiet until I want to be connected to the outside world (which isn’t often). Also have an RFID sleeve which makes my phone invisible.

  7. Wow, that is a plunge! I hate my cellphone with my whole body. Hate being “on-call”. But I can totally understand the economic side of it. My brother and his wife have been like that for years in Atlanta, GA. Good luck with the transition! And, anyway, when it gets to be too much (or “if” I should say) you can always turn it OFF! Hope you get the right JD 4040! I love Minnesota, but I guess if there’s one closer that’s the one that makes the most sense! You guys take care, Linda!

  8. I’m sure there might even be JD 4040 on this side of the border 😉 I’m using my cell phone more and more…..maybe we should bite the bullet and switch off the landline.

  9. We’ve almost taken the plunge, but we still have a house phone. It is through a wireless company, however, so it is much less expensive than a regular land line. We’re currently debating about taking the plunge to a smart phone.

  10. I guess I say Congrats!? 🙂 I don’t have a cell phone – call me stubborn, I probably wont ever get one either. (unless forced too). Hubby has a cell phone. I am always with hubby. We have a land line too. we can forward our landline to the cell phone. Kinda makes people confused when they call the house and we’re not home! 🙂
I guess I don’t like the “ball & chain” the cell phone has.
Like you guys, we are always “home”. You have 3 options to get ahold of us. Land line, leave a msg, cell phone, or come visit. 🙂
    Have a great day!
Congrats on Fuzzy & Boomer! whoo hooo! 🙂

  11. BE sure since you live on a FARM where the PHONE might SLiP or FALL in the MUD or
WATER or SNOW..Get a Water Proof Cover for it, Immediately. Go Back to the Store and Get one . Insurance does NOT cover dropping in WATER or getting wet : Get extra protecting from a WATERPROOF and Crush able cover..NOT that expensive and well worth it BASED on the PICTURES I have seen..Remember it IS your Lifeline for FIRE and POLICE
You might want to purchase one more phone [Cheap from Walmart] that you pay by the minute for extra safety..
BY the WAY REGISTER YOUR CELL PHONE with the Local Safety dept. CELL PHONE when you call 911 might not register your location..IF you purchased from ATT it should have been registered by them but best to check

From ATT In this article, we’ll provide you with options to replace your broken phone or other wireless device. First, you’ll need to determine if your device is damaged or defective:

Does your device have physical or liquid damage? For example, your device stopped working after getting wet or the screen is cracked. If so, your device is damaged and isn’t covered by warranty.
If your device doesn’t have physical or liquid damage, have you tried our AT&T Troubleshoot & Resolve tool from your PC or tablet? If you’re unable to resolve the issue using the tool, then your device may be defective.

  12. My aren’t we modern! Do make sure that you can easily reach a local agency if you have to call 911 from your cell phone. Sometimes you are routed to an agency like Highway Patrol that will have to hunt for the number to the police or fire department closest to you, causing a delayed response in an emergency.

  13. Like others, we tried to take the plunge, but the “bundle” of cable, Internet and phone is better priced than without the phone. All we get is telemarketers.
Good luck with the tractor hunt

  14. We got cell phone when our first Grandchild Mom was pregnant,so she could get help quick. we also had problem getting rid of the house phone, they kept trying to give us good deals, sooo I called our state commerce commission and told him the problem. they would not shut us off,so he called the phone company, that was Friday. on Monday I got a call from the phone Co. and said they were sorry and would shut it off. also gave us a $30 discount. With in a couple hours it was off. I let the Comm. commission know and he said to let him know if any more problems. he said the phone companies do that to keep the customer. So you have that help if you are serious shutting your phone off. This was Kansas commission. Sharon Drake

  15. I’d love to ditch the landline but there’s a dead spot for cell service here in the middle of the Detroit suburb I live in. Many times, my kids and I will just hang up the cell phone and use the landline because the reception is so bad, even with the booster I bought. And the state is considering letting phone companies drop all landlines (or charge a lot more for them)!

  16. I don’t like phones..my husband has a cell phone and the home phone…he answers them too. I am sure I would lose a cell phone ..I would lay it down someplace and never find it. Where in MN are you going? 🙂

  17. Congratulations!
We are cutting back, too; but not quite that far yet. I got a tracfone, and he got a single account through AT&T, where we get our internet.
We had to have the heater fixed on our trailer.
Good luck with your tractor excursions!

  18. It’s kind of a cool feeling when your grandchildren are proud of you isn’t it! Pretty soon, nobody will even know what a phone book is! Of course we’ve been cell only for over 10 years! We have two cell phones with different numbers. While we were traveling all the time, it suddenly occurred to us that with just the one phone, if one of us had a problem away from the RV, we would have had no way to call the other one.

  19. We still have our land line because we bundled a deal on internet, call waiting and long distance and it is expensive. But after my DH fell and broke his hip we decided to carry cell phones just for emergencies. So our tracfones don’t have any features and our cells are not under contract. These are used by us in case of emergencies and we both carry one when in the yard or away from home. He laid outside the chicken coop for hours before I came home. Won’t happen again. And with respect to the phone and calls I, too, got tired of voices after transcribing doctors notes for 5 hours every day and I had a quota and 24 hr turnaround time in my business. So phones are convenience at this home…for us. Remembering to update minutes and charging phones are issues for seniors….can’t remember stuff.

  20. I’ve not made the leap to cell phone only yet. For some reason hate to give up my land line, just too old to change, I guess! 🙂

What a wonderful write-up about you, Fuzzy and Boomer!! So very nice.

    Blessings!
