Today is My Birthday January 14, 1949 (2014)

Today I am officially a Medicare recipient.   Said like that I feel O.L.D.

But I really don’t feel old.  I’m sometimes surprised when I see myself in the mirror: “OH!  Why that IS me.  Hummmm I don’t feel like that person,”  is the glancing thought I give myself as I finish washing my face and going about the day.

Sometimes I am struck by the beauty of my grandchildren’s little hands…Bladen’s long nimble fingers, Linkin’s busy, always busy, doing something hands, and Tallen’s sweet little baby hands that are quickly turning into a 6 year’s old.

I see those hands and reach out to touch them…. mine with years of work on the backs, fingers sort of bent and crooked from old-time injuries, and the hard and lumpy joints starting to show up where my thumb meets my wrist.  There are many years between us…those bright-eyed wonders waiting to experience the world and myself and Terry.  We have reached the age of wisdom and ability and true hard-knocks education — they are still at the age they know the world is big and they have much to learn and to give to it.

Terry and I have the privilege of knowing we get to pass on to them —the memories of us.  The other stuff is up their parents.  🙂

On Friday Terry and I will become Tally’s show and tell—for show in tell she has to bring something that starts with G… she decided on GRANDPARENTS!  Terry and I want to take something to give to all the little Kindergartners that starts with a G…we are still thinking on it. If you have ideas we are open!

Anyway…today at 4 minutes to midnight I will enter this world.  65 years later I’m still going strong!

  2. happy 65th!!! at 50, i don’t recognize myself in the mirror – i see my older sisters or even my mother sometimes, and it surprises me as i feel about 38.

    G – i’d go for gold. and i’d buy gold-foil-wrapped candies of some sort. 🙂

  3. Happy Birthday, dear friend. I think an interesting thing about being 65 is now when you fill out forms, you don’t have to look for the correct box for “age.” It’s always the last one, where everyone over 65 is lumped together, even though we’re all as different as we ever were.

  5. Happy Birthday Linda!! I am almost 9 months behind you, turning 65 in September. Your words about your grandchildren’s hands next to your hard working ones was beautifully stated. I’m always amused by the innocent questioning of what those “brown spots” are, or “you can see your veins Grandma!” Yes, yes my dears, and you shall too if you work long and hard 🙂 Have an absolutely blessed and wonderful day.   6. Congratulations on another successful trip around the sun!!! We remember the heady days when Eisenhower was president. We remember where we were when Kennedy was shot. We loved Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. We are the lucky generation. We saw – and felt – so much.

  13. I will be 69 Jan. 23. I have no idea where those years went and how they could have gone so fast. I also look in the mirror and wonder who that old lady is. I am thankful that I have good health and only a few aches and pains. I wish you a Happy Birthday and a good year to come.

  14. Happy birthday! How fun! And how fun to be a real live show and tell. Visitors in my classroom when I was a 3rd grade teacher were popular when they brought cookies or lollipops or fancy pencils for the kids. They were also popular if they brought something for the classroom, like a joke book, a storybook, or a plant for the kids to take care of. I bet the kids would also love to see pictures of you when you were babies and Tally when she was a baby. Have fun!

    I love your description of your grandchildren..I don, t see mine that often to be able to make comparison , so it is lovely to share yours.
    Can, t believe you are 65! but you have many years to go before you can catch me up.

  18. Welcome to the world of Medicare. Just because a person qualifies for Medicare doesn’t mean he/she is O.L.D. I firmly believe age is a state of mind, although sometimes the aches and pains can exert influence. I think it’s neat that you and Terry are going to be Tally’s show-and-tell. I wish I could come up with a good ‘G’ gift.

  19. Happy Birthday! My mother and I were just talking about when we look in the mirror. Its like “who the heck is that”? I sure don’t feel like that person. But we are all still beautiful. My fav is what the old guy says, ” if getting old was fun, everyone would wanna do it”! Love that.
    The only “G” idea I have is gloves. Hubby says goose poop! LOL! That’s what he calls Cheetos. Silly man.

  20. A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you Linda….its been a few years since I saw my 65 hit me in the face…and yes I do the same, I look at my face in the mirror and think…who is that? and then my hands, I cant believe the wrinkles on them too…lol.

    For the G how about granola bars for everyone in class, they are good and nutritious to boot.

  21. I hit that big number almost exactly a year ago. Babies born in January and six decades ago had to have a strong spirit. Glad to know you, glad to be a January Sister. Keep on going. We may not be totally over the hill…but what a VIEW! Happy Birthday.

  23. Gingerbread is the best one [from the list above] and LOTS of good G ideas…and if you make it, it will be loved..Gingerbread is something we make all the time for dessert [of course its gluten free for us]

    I am with some of the others I was thinking of cookies maybe you made with them with some of the G ingredients added in after all they your grandchild picked YOU for Their “G” Have a great time blowing those young minds away with a vitality only those of us who have truly lived can share then come back and give us every detail 🙂

  25. Hello! You are a fabulous descriptive writer, wow! Happy Medicare day! You’re still younger than my dad, don’t feel too terrible. I just took some silly FB test and it said I’m mentally 13… I figured 15 so only a little off (I’m 42). That is truly lovely that you were picked for G! I bet you are still grinning with joy.

  26. Happy Birthday! Friday suggestions would be: GooGoo Clusters, Graham Crackers, Green Grapes. Glitter pens (the teacher might like them for students to use for art projects), I think it is a great compliment that your grandchild wants to bring you to show and tell!

  27. No talkin’ about getting old to someone who pre-dates’ you by 9 years! Happy Birthday! And have a great time being the “Gs”. (Our great-grandsons call us the “GGs”.) The other kids in the class will be jealous of Tally for having such young and interesting grandparents!

    I have watched my hands change also. And I enjoy my grandsons’ hands as they grow up and get stronger. I won’t thumb wrestle with them anymore!!! 🙂

I would probably take Gum or Gumballs, you could tape a stick of Gum to a letter G that they could take home )

  41. I am so sorry I missed your birthday. S, Happy Birthday late. I will be sending you your towels in the mail this week. I finally had the time to get them off the little loom. The little loom takes so much time, because I can only use my hands rather than both my hands and feet! I hope you like them and please, if you do spread the word. I can weave just about anything in any color and up to about 45 inches in width and just about any length. I think grapes is a good idea.
