The Fox Returns January 26, 2014

Well, I know for sure we have a fox in the yard.  He tried to be a fox in the hen house, or even the poultry house last night.  Stuff like that makes me really mad.

Although, I have Night guard lights surrounding the poultry area, he was sitting by the wood pile.  Hollering at me…more than likely hollering at the poultry!    Now I have to very diligent because once a fox finds out you have yummy food, just for the taking, they will show up day or night.

One time I was out raking by the hen house, the hens were pecking around close to me, we were all talking and having a good time getting the yard cleaned up— when a Mother Fox zoomed in, grabbed a hen right next to me and ran off down the lane.  I gave chase, but the fox is many, many, many times faster than I.  I’m sure the hen was great food for her den full of kits!

Anyway, I turned all the outside lights on and ran out the door faster than Boomer and Fuzzy with my flashlight yelling at it to “GIT!”  Of course, that worked for the moment.

Like I said I have to really be on the look out during the day (which means keeping the dogs outside) then putting the poultry up early, before dusk really.   I’m hoping I can keep everyone safe until the fox starts to find much easier prey.

The sky was a blaze of pink last night.  Stunning really!  I stood outside a long time and took too many photos.  I truly enjoyed standing in a color so pink that everything around it took on the same shade.

  1. Hi, you are so right, once foxy knows that the hens are there he/she will be back time and time again. We tried human hair, urine and/or a radio playing in the hen house. Have you tried any of these?E

  2. Rubber bullets. Sit on the porch like Whistler’s Mother with a shotgun. *L* But seriously, I hope those foxes don’t get any unauthorized meals from your farm.

  3. The Boys will have to be on HIGH ALERT! I don’t usually see fox here, but every now and then.
You are getting great skies! Good photos!
How is the furnace project coming along?
I thought about you yesterday when a nice guy came to buy and haul away an old baler and bale wagon. Nice to have them gone!

  4. Oh My—that is scary… That stinkin’ fox is like a squirrel here –but much worse to have around. Squirrels come back and come back and come back once they know there’s food for them here in my bird feeders… At least, they don’t try to eat the birds! ha…..

How does he get into the hen house? One blogger (can’t remember who) said that they covered the top of their hen house to protect the hens –and nothing could get inside.

Another question… Can you shoot him –or are they ‘protected’???? We use a pellet gun sometimes to scare away the squirrels. Stuns them but doesn’t really hurt them… We also capture them –and carry them about 5 miles and let them out in the woods.

So sorry –since I know you aren’t getting much sleep.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  6. I hope the fox finds a friendlier kitchen that doesn’t have Fuzzy, Boomer and you guarding it. The skies are spectacular, almost looks like there is a raging fire beyond the horizon.

  7. OH Boy, you sure have your work cut out for you.

When I lived on a ranch and we had lots of chickens, every night something would get into the coop, we dont know how it got in, but each morning there would be about 2 to 5 chickens dead. Just laying there on the ground, whatever it was didnt take them or maybe couldnt and it didnt eat them either, killed them for sport it looked like. Soon we were out of chickens and the darn thing went after the peacocks and they were high up in the trees and they ended up all gone but not a feather was found. We never did find what it was that was doing this either.

  9. Dratted foxes – lovely to look at, but no good when you are trying to run a farm! Hope the dogs keep it away and your Ft Knox chicken shelter discourages it. Lovely photos! Like standing in a moving pink blanket 🙂

  10. Hope the fox leaves soon! Coyotes are our main problem here, but we do have foxes, too.

Your sky is absolutely gorgeous! We had a gorgeous sunrise this a.m. And, of course, I had to take a picture, too!! My DD says I could have a huge album of pretty skies and clouds!

    Blessings!

  11. Sorry to hear a fox has found your chickens. I dare say it has met its match! We had a brilliant sunset last night–once the sun moved to the narrow break in the clouds just above the horizon. It couldn’t color the entire sky like your lovely sunset.

  12. We are having problems with the buggers too as well as those nasty coyotes at the moment. Snares have been set and we’ll see how things went when I get home today. The fox is circling the henhouse as well as the two building that the rabbits hide under.
The coyotes are keeping vigil over the cattle herd and we can only hope they’re caught within in the next 45 days before the new babes start arriving.

  13. Linda, we have foxes here too but so far we have never lost a hen to them. Our sheepdog sleeps in a shed right by our hens, don’t know whether that helps – but in the day time the hens roam the fields. I suppose the day will come when we begin to lose them – but I do feel for you.
